    Whenever I boot up my machine, it still gives me the option to boot either XP or Windows7. I have deleted windows 7, and i still get the option menu with windows 7 as the default.

    here is a copy of my boot.ini:

    As you can see, Windows7 is not listed anywhere. The startup options tab in the advanced system menu says that I have XP set as my default. but every time the computer reboots after an automatic update, it still tries to boot windows7.

    in another thread on the same topic it was suggested to uncheck the "time to display list of operating systems" option and make sure that XP was set as the default. I've been afraid to try this since Windows7 has been acting like the default.

    Thanks for any help

    Vista and Win7 use a new bootmanager called BCDEdit.exe ...But, I'd first try:

    Alternatively, and safer, download EasyBCD and remove the reference to XP the OS.

    open system configuration utility

    Start->run->msconfig and hit Enter

    Then you will see System configueration windows
    Click on BOOT.INI tab
    Then Click on CHECK ALL BOOT PATHS
    It will show you the the operating system which is listed in the Boot file but of no use
    You can simply remove the one which is of No use

    Take care

    Won't work, because the computer is using the Windows 7 boot manager.

    Boot off your Windows XP CD & start Recovery Console. Run the command fixmbr (and maybe also fixboot) if fixmbr doesn't work).

    If you have a Win7 DVD, you can follow these instructions too (although written for Vista, the procedure with Win7 is the same).
