    I have used StyleXp for a while but got tired of it. I uninstalled it and it deleted everything having to do with it very well, except for one thing. When I power on my computer there is a screen where I can choose what boot screen to start the options are:

    1. Windows XP (Bootscreen)
    2. Windows XP

    I would like to get rid of option #1 because without it the screen wouldn't appear, and it would go straight to the sign-up screen. Option #2 is the original boot screen that StyleXp kept as a back-up. I hope someone can help.

    thanks for your time,
    Fernando

    Control Panel->System icon->Advanced tab->Start & Recovery->Change the menu time from 30 seconds to 1 or edit the boot.ini file.

    edit boot.ini file

    Thanks for the help, but I'd rather edit the boot.ini file. How would I do that?

    Go to the same location and click the Edit button. Remove the reference.

    Or, just find boot.ini in the root directory and open it with Notepad, Wordpad, or some other text editor.

    this is what it looks like on the notepad now:

    [boot loader]
    timeout=1
    default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
    [operating systems]
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS= "Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition (bootscreen)" /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn /KERNEL=kernel1.exe
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS= "Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition" /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn

    would it be safe to change it to this:

    [boot loader]
    timeout=1
    default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
    [operating systems]
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS= "Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition" /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn

    just want to make sure before making any changes

    If you aren't comfortable editing the boot.ini, just change the time out to 0 (that's a zero). If you do this you'll won't see the boot screen anymore.

    Taking into account the fact that there is a problem pasting, you have removed the correct part and that should work fine.

    As insurance, you may want to make a bootable floppy with this program that will allow you to edit the boot.ini if there are any problems starting your computer:

    http://users.adelphia.net/~abraxas/dl/BootIniEdit.exe

    There could be a problem with just setting the timeout to 0. Uninstalling StyleXP may have removed the specified alternate kernel (kernel1.exe) and the machine would not boot. Chances are that it boots now only by making the second choice in the menu.

    yeah, I don't think It is a good idea to change the timeout time to zero. I asked if erasing that part of the boot.ini file would be ok, since the second entry does not execute the "kernel" file, or at least that's what it seems:

    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS= "Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition" /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn

    yeah, i've tried selecting both entries, and they both boot perfectly,
    so i guess i just get rid of the first one... Abraxas, what exactly does the program you gave me do? It asked for a floppy, can i use this as a boot disk?

    It's a very specialized boot disk---it contains only the files needed to access and edit the boot.ini file.

    There isn't any real "boot disk" for XP in the sense of 98's since there is little that can be done to NTFS files from DOS, but this modified 98 boot disk will give you read-only access to NTFS drives:

    http://users.adelphia.net/~abraxas/dl/BD98.exe

    There are many others depending what you want to accomplish.
