Removing Avira Program - How to?

I installed this program and it worked fine, though I really cannot say that for certain, as it did not catch some minor problems that Malwarebytes and another vendor's software suggested here (I forget) scans noted...

Regardless, my drive crashed and I (thought I) reinstalled the Avira program...

Note, I believe the expire date was 9.1 so it not functioning may be due to passing the date. But, not that is not the problem.

The software resides on my drive, but I cannot remove it...file in use message.

I tried the Avira site, and basically it is a waste of time, and a search provided no information to remove or how to contact by phone (German firm) in US.

As the antivirus software is promoted here, are there any suggestions?

Thanks, will give it a try.

Program does not show in list of "add or remove." It just sits in same folder, all many m-bytes of it, doing nada.
