I tried to install an antivirus program on a friend's PC and get a message that there is already an antivirus program installed. No other details.

I certainly would appreciate any assistance in finding this other program because I certainly have not had any luck doing so.

While I am at it, he also has some empty directories on this PC and when I tried to delete them I get a message that they are not empty. I thought that if I could boot to Safe Mode I could correct this, but I cannot boot to Safe Mode for some reason.

Once again, I certainly would also appreciate any assistance.

    Many Thanks.

It'd good idea, if you post HijackThis log, so we can see what's running there.

I found this entry in the Registry and assume that it was a program which had been installed at some time.

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\MenuOrder\Start Menu2\Programs\Norton AntiVirus]

This does not show up in the Add/Remove section so can I just delete it?

Without HJT log I'm not able to tell you. I have no idea what's running on your machine.
