How to remove win Update Version 5?
Version 5 requires these setrvices per the error message I get at the MS site and I do NOT want these services running:

Windows Update cannot continue because a required service application is disabled. Windows Update requires the following services:
Automatic Updates enables detection, downloading, and installation of critical updates for your computer.
Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) enables faster, restartable downloading of updates.

Why not set them as Manual, then start them before doing an update and stop them afterwards?

    Hi Tony,

How to remove win Update Version 5?
    What would be the point?

I don't think you have a choice anyway, either that, or you don't access the Update site. I just went thru jousting w/ MS as well. What I've been doing is sometimes turning AU on, sometimes off through the panel, and sometimes shut the Service down. Once I get SP2 installed, AU will be disabled, which is back to the way I've had it untill this SP2 business.

The Catalog site is a different matter though, that works fine, but right now, not clear on how it's going to work post SP2.

    Regards - Charles

    Hi Super,

That's the Catalog site. Can be accessed thru v5 as well and tried that, but I already have v5.

Has anyone refused a v5 update when offered?

    Regards - Charles

I have refused them, no problem. After initially turning on Auto Update as directed (but selecting to be notified for permission to install) , I then refused all downloads. Then I got tired of seeing the nagging bubble notification of available downloads so I then turned Auto Update off and tested the site again. It now offers downloads without forcing them. Go figure.

One thing you won't get as far as I can tell is SP2 notification then. So if willing to either download the current one available - that big "developers" version - or wait on the cd from MS, or not installing SP2, then sticking w/ v4 is the way to go.

AFAIK, SP2 will give you v5 whether you want it or not.

Tony, can you go back to a System Restore point prior to v5? Haven't run across a way to uninstall it, at least not yet.

    Regards - Charles

    Thanks all.
    I restored a Ghost image.
I was just curious 'how to remove win update once it get installed ".

I just received my XP SP2 CD from MS today in the latest MSDN Universal package of CDs. (MSMVP Program)

I will wait on installing SP2 for a few more months. There's nothing in it that I really need or that is that important for my needs.

I can do manual updates as they are released.

No, I have never had System Restore installed, Ghost is easier and better.

If anyone knows how to dump ver 5 WU, I would love to know. I wish I would have never allowed it. Of course, the MS Update page is useless without it, but... ver 5 is invasive!
