Ever since I updated my Windows XP last week, whenever I click on the Start button, "Set Program Access and Defaults" shows up on the Start Menu. I want to get rid of this item. But when I right-click on this item, there is no delete button. How can I get rid of it? Thank you.

C:\ and the Documents & Settings folder. Your account. Start menu.

If not there, same location but the All Users account.

Or, right click start>properties>startmenu tab>customize>advanced tab and uncheck from list.

To noahdfear: Thank you for your response. But when I clicked the Advance tab I did not see "Set Program Access and Defaults" on any list. Please advise. Thank you.

After clicking the advanced tab there should be a window entitled 'start menu items'. Scroll to the bottom of that list. Next to last choice should be 'set program access and defaults'. Uncheck the box next to it then OK to close.

If it is indeed not there, maybe someone else can tell us why (I will be looking for possibe causes in the meantime).

It should also be shown as a shortcut in the C:\documents and settings\all users\ start menu folder as Newt suggested. Delete it.

    abx...

Could he be running his "Start Menu" in "Start Menu Classic" mode as "Set Program Access and Defaults" is not listed under "Advanced ". When I use the classic mode and click "Advanced" it opens a Windows Explorer window at "Start Mneu "

If you use the normal "Start Menu" (the bubble gum mode as we call it) then click on "Advanced" tab it is listed there as noahfear has stated near the bottom of the list.

Could be a Policy thing...if he has WinXP Pro he could go into Policy Editor and see if anything is turned off.

Could also be a "Permission" problem ?

    Work around:
This was one of the latest updates offered by microsoft. Perhaps if you go back through them you can uninstall this particular one. (update numbered#8208291-should be accessible and uninstallable via control panels add/remove) See:
New "Set Program Access and Defaults" Start Menu Icon and Help Content Are Available for Windows XP

I also, have the option from the rclick_startbutton>select_properties>blah-blah dialog popupwindow. Let me switch to classic and see what happens.......

Humm..It shows up as one of top level shortcut and is deleted by a right click option on the shortcut its self, on the classic menu.
