    What is the file extension to remove local policies on a 98 machine. This Laptop was a former corporate machine that had some local policies put in place. For example: Regedit is disabled and there is no device manager.

    I think this file has a .pol extension. You might also try uninstalling the Group Policies in Add/Remove Windows components. Whether this removes policy restrictions as well, I don't know. No harm trying---it can always be put back.

    Try finding a file named "poledit.exe ", too. This may be on the 98 CD if not on your computer.

    Thanks for you help. There was an Admin pack that I just removed and I thought that would do the trick. Unfortinately now I can get past the windows log on screen so I guess it's time to format.
    Oh well we tried. Thanks for your help.

    There are reg and inf. A reg is easier to use in windows and dos, and create, a inf gets real complicated. I am going to guess that Safe Mode is also disabled. If you can get into Safe Mode, regedit will work. Go to the key in the bold text and change the Value Data to 0.
    If the laptop has a floppy drive you can try this, if booting from a floppy has not been disabled in the BIOS. Copy and paste the bold text below and Save As "Enable.Reg ". You will need to make sure that Word Wrap is turned off, and the line with the braces is all one line, the braces need to be there. This forum has a habit of wrapping lines.

    REGEDIT4

    [HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System]
    "DisableRegistryTools "=dword:00000000

    Boot the laptop with floppy, type in the complete command at the prompt;

    c:\windows\regedit.exe a:\enable.reg

    Boot up windows, open Regedit, go to the Policy Key above and look through the SubKeys below it, and Modify the Value Data of the Values to 0, a 1 enables the restriction, or delete the Values. Another Key and SubKeys to look at;
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies

    Do not delete or modify the Value named "NoDriveTypeAutoRun ".

    Hope all this helps. If logging on as a User already setup and Family logon is used, this will get a bit more difficult.
