There is a New Icon in my toolbar, at the bottom right of the screen.
It is "Remove Hardware Safely" and when I click on it... The only thing it
displays in an HP Inkjet Printer (I have two printers on my machine).
Question: How do I make this Icon go away? It doesn't seem to be causing
any problems with the printers or XP OS.
    regards, flatfoot.

You can remove the printer from the USB port, or just turn it off if not using it and the icon will disappear. It does no harm and is there to tell you, you can remove a device from the USB port(s)...

The Safely Remove Hardware icon will also appear if you plug in an external hard drive. The drive should only be disconnected through the Safely Remove Hardware icon to ensure that it is not reading or writing - if it is simply pulled out there is the possibility of data loss. This does not usually apply to pen drives which are generally set up by Windows for Quick Removal - i.e. can be plugged in/pulled out at will.

flatfoot--As has been said, that icon is probably not hurting anything.
But if you do not like looking at it, right click a blank spot on the taskbar|Properties|Customize|change the setting for the " Safely Remove Hardware" icon in the Behavior column to "Always Hide "|OK|Apply|OK. Now you won't see it, but you can find it, when you want to use it, by clicking on that backward Chevron on the Taskbar.

    Welshjim, That worked just great.
Thanks everyone else for taking time to reply.

I have two printers because I type lots of reports.
I am too lazy to reload paper or change Ink Cartridges.
