My desktop computer, which runs a highly customized installation of Win7 HP SP1, is networked with my laptop computer, running XP Pro SP3.

On the Win7 computer My Network Places (or whatever it's called in Win7 ... I've renamed it simply NETWORK) in Windows Explorer displays both computers (see screenshot).

What I'd like to do, if possible, is remove the WIN7-DESKTOP entry from the NETWORK display. It's completely redundant, as it merely repeats every drive, folder, and sub-folder from the file tree above, listing them individually.

I've searched online for an answer, but have found nothing. Any thoughts?

Well, it could break other things, but here you go:

    • Type this in your Start menu search box & press [Enter]: services.msc
    • Set the Function Discovery Resource Publication service to Disabled

Stop the running service & you're done.

    Hi Arie,

    Thanks for the quick reply.

I did as you suggested, but nothing has changed, even though I rebooted both computers. The desktop computer still appears in the network in Windows Explorer, and each computer can still see (which. as I understand the description in Services, shouldn't be the case), and transfer files to and from, the other.

Don't know what to tell you... I actually did test this myself, and it works without the need for a reboot.

I don't know what to tell you, either, except that making the suggested change in Services does nothing at all on my computers.

Apparently so, unless someone else comes up with a bright idea.
