Hi All, .............. I made the mistake of letting my system upgrade to Thunderbird 3.1.3. This version has a screen presentation where a toolbar (quick filter bar?) takes up space with detail I consider unnecessary. This toolbar starts on the left with Inbox and continues across to the right with parts of the first word of existing mail even though the mail titles are displayed beneath the toolbars. Is it possible to remove this toolbar and if so how?

There is a "Toggle the quick filter bar" button above it, to the right end.

Broni, ........... Thank you for the quick reply. First I have to correct something in my initial post. The toggle that you refer to does switch the Quick Filter toolbar on and off. That is not the toolbar that concerns me. My interest is removing the one that starts on the left with Inbox and extends to the right with part of the Subject word. I'll continue calling it the Inbox Toolbar although it can start with any of the left panel headings such as Drafts, Sent, etc. At the end of that space on the right is a down arrow. When that is activated it produces a drop down that contains Inbox and a listing of mail. So now we can have the word Inbox and the starting mail subjects in three different places. Certainly such redundancy is not necessary.

It may be that with this version of TB the Inbox Toolbar can't be removed. In my earlier TB when finished reading mail I would click of the Back arrow and would be returned to the two-panel screen with Inbox, Drafts, Sent, on the left and a listing of incoming mail in the right panel. With TB 3.1.3 the only way that I see to keep TB open is to click on the Inbox of its toolbar. If there are any other ideas about eliminating the Inbox Toolbar, I would like to explore them.

I don't have anything like it was described. I did my update from Help|Check for Updates, and there is no extra toolbar. I will double check, but I find it hard to believe that I missed it. All I got was a Tab, like previous versions, which told me what the new version was like.
After closing that Tab, everything was back like before.
But, may be you are referring to the blank space to the right of the Inbox tab. It is for Tabs, if you want them. I, also have the extention Lighting, for Calendar, and it has a couple icon on the far right of that space.

Westside, .............. Thank you for your input. As I said in my first Post my mistake was letting the system automatically upgrade to TB 3.1.3. A manual install, which yours probably was, would have shown some unwanted (to me) parts that could have been ignored or replaced with those that I'm familiar with. The Mozilla messaging site for Thunderbird 3.1 which indicates choices between the new and old message toolbars and also a discussion of the "Migration Assistant would have been helpful before the newer version of TB had been installed.

For the present I'm going back to TB 2.0.0.24 and get my thoughts organized before upgrading to TB 3.1. Again thanks for your help.

Can you post a screenshot, so we know, what you're talking about?

Broni, ............. Thank you for your continued interest but as I have stated in my recent Post I'm going back to a former version where the TB screen is not so confusing to me. The lesson I learned here is that more choices may be offered with a manual install. And now that I have had an opportunity to examine what is offered at the Mozilla messaging site for Thunderbird 3.1 I'll eventually attempt a 3.1 version.

As for posting a screen shot, I'm afraid that is above my area of expertise. I might add that in searching Mozilla and TB sites others seem to have similar questions about version 3.1.3.

When you go back to TB 3.1....
Open TB, press PrtScr key on your keyboard.
Now, open MS Paint and press CTRL+V keys.
Your screenshot will display inside MS Paint window.

My installation was as manual as it can be, while allowing the program to do what it wanted. I did not see anything objectionable. As for Migration, I did not need it, as I am still using TB2.x, while having tested 3.x with a different profile. The two profiles have the same number of accounts. I had, already, uninstalled 3.x, at an early stage. I found that 3.1 was not so bad, but I, still, don't like v.3.x, but for different reasons. Having seven accounts, I cannot do a thing until all new mail is downloaded. I mean that I cannot open a message, or move it, or delete it, or if I can do anything, it is painfully slow. Once all messages are downloaded, I can operate as fast with 3.x than 2.x
