    Hello,

My subscription to Norton Systemwors 2002 ran out, so I updated to the 2006 version. I use Windows 2000 and have dialup internet. After seeing that the download would take 4 hours, I contacted Symantec -- they said they would send a CD for installation. I asked if I needed to uninstall my current version first and I was told to use Add/Remove and if I had any problems to contact a tech person at Symantec. After reading some posts here, that does not seem to be enough to uninstall everything. I have followed some links to the symantec removal tools, but cannot find any instructions for removing Norton Systemworks 2002.

    Any help is greatly appreciated!

Jeane--You start by using Control Panel|Add/Remove. But, indeed, this often leaves lots of stuff behind. Here is what Symantec offers
    http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPOR...b5cb9298b0bc60b785256edf00520f30?OpenDocument
On the outside chance that does not work, here is what Symantec offers to uninstall NSW2003
    http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/nsw.nsf/docid/2001091013435207
    might work for 2002
And then a fellow named the Shadow offers Norton Killer.exe
    http://help.lockergnome.com/security/SystemWorks-COMPLETE-UNINSTALL-ftopict404.html
    could be risky.

Thanks for the info. I will start with Add/Remove and go from there. If in the future I decide on getting rid of Norton, what, if any similar products do you recommend -- I like the systemworks because of the Go Back and Clean Sweep (I have Win2000).

    Jeane,

You may also want to try RegSeeker to rid your registry of any Norton entries. I used it to remove any entries in my registry when I removed my Norotn products.

Thanks for the links. I read that Symantec recommends first uninstalling with Add/Remove, then, if problems are found when installing the new version of NSW, download and install a program called SYMClean to remove leftover files and registry entries (and if this does not work, they suggest a manual uninstall). I'm wondering if I should uninstall with Add/Remove and run SYMClean before I install the new version? What do you think?

I can see why many people drop their Norton!

    Thanks again,

    Jeane

Personally, I would remove the program completely before installing the new. But that's just me. :D

    MinnesotaMike--Agree!
The instruction book that comes with NSW2006 says nothing about uninstalling previous versions, but the person with whom Jeane spoke certainly seems to advise it.

I don't usually do this but here's a link that might help you out. There are a few disclaimers in there but don't let it scare you. How to Remove Norton SystemWorks

My sympathies. Symantec/Norton products are notoriously nasty to remove. Some can be got rid of by going to My Computer>Hard Drive C>Program Files and searching for any Symantic or Norton folders, and deleting them.
