I have to troubleshoot someone from home tonight (assuming I can get my own copy of windows working), so I was going to use the remote desktop tool.

However, they're on a wireless laptop, connecting to their router. If I understand right, the IP address they have will be assigned by their router, which then generates its OWN address for the internet at large.

If I try to remote desktop the address on the laptop, nothing will come up, because it's subnetted (right word?) to the router. And I can't user the router's IP address, because then I'm connecting to the router and not the computer.

Or do I have this all wrong?

    1. Remote Desktop uses specific ports.
    2. The router MUST be configured to port forward RD reqiuests to the LAN IP address of the comp you want to connect to.
    3. You then connect using the WAN IP address (the address assigned by the ISP). This will be sensed by te router and it will pass your request to the target computer.

If the target compt is using a firewall it MUST be set to allow RD.

And this process for port-forwarding will be router-specific? Just so I know what to look up - ie, a windows procedure or a belkin/linksys/whatever it is document...

Port forwarding is a feature configured on the router usinga Web browser.
    example:
    linksys & remote desktop
