Hi I have always been able to logon to my work remotely from home in the past and recently I cannot. I access work through Remote Desktop Connection and I can successfully ping this address and get a return. However the same address in the Remote Desktop Connection results with a message "Your computer cannot connect to the remote computer because the RDP server address in unreachable or incorrect. Type a valid Desktop Gateway Server address ". I have checked with our IT lady and she can't help but adds others are able to login remotely. So I want to try and figure out what is going wrong, how do I diagnose this?

    That message usually doesn't lie.

But, I have a client that I see it all the time. I have to use a Win XP machine and then I can connect. Pretty certain there is a setting on the Server to only use specific versions of RDP.

Are you using the same computer you always use to make the connection?

Hi Yes the same computer and it worked reliably for years. Our IT lady says nothing has changed her side and others can log in why can't you. The OP system I have is Windows 7 and it has been fine. Is there a way to diagnose and see what is happening and why I can't connect?

    Hi Neil,

No still no go. I tried this and didn't help. I downloaded Windows10 hoping it may help as I have Home Edition of Win7 but alas do different. No connection to RDP. Is there a step my step diagnosis anywhere that could help?

Just a thought to try. Can you download and install at both comps software like Teamviewer and see if that allows remote connection. Neil.
Another request - what is the OS used by the IT lady?

Hi I have run Teamviewer before and it has worked OK but not accessed my office computer.
The OS IT lady I am not sure. But my work colleagues don't have any issue. I think it is something at my end b.locking it somehow but what I don't know.

Have you cleared it in your Firewall? Neil.

Hi Neil, I couldn't find anything that said RDP in the "Allow apps to communicate through Windows firewall" tab. There were a number of things that had remote in them and they were un-checked.

If you go into the "Allow Programs" section of the firewall you should see an option fro Remote Desktop.

    Hi Steve,
There isn't an option for Remote Desktop this is not listed.
Remote Desktop sits as an icon on my desktop and I have always in the past opened it from there successfully but not now.

In the Firewall-> Click on CHANGE SETTINGS ->Then click on Allow Another Program and see if you see Remote Desktop there.

Did you look in the last area:

Then click on Allow Another Program and see if you see Remote Desktop there.

    Hi Steve,
No RDP or RDC are not there. Maybe it is because the edition I have is Home when maybe it should be Pro or Enterprise, maybe that is it???

Home versions can "call out" but not receive incoming connections.

    Hi Steve,
I took my laptop in to our IT lady and she got it going at work on RDP and said she just needed to install a certificate. Brought it home and it is fine and works. The laptop is running Win 10 home edition. My desktop however that I prefer to use is also Win 10 home edition and will not connect. So both are working through the same router running the same program and OS and have the same settings, but one works and one doesn't. Any clues??

Hi warpy55, This may be the answer to your problem in W10 Home Edition.
It doesn't answer the question why you couldn't connect in W7. Neil.
