I called HP an they are just pathetic when it comes to technical questions. They told me that I Should reinstall my original software (Vista premium)...of course thats an easy way out. For starters my 2 remotes work fine when I plug in a usb external remote receiver that came with my "TV Tuner ". But the problem is the sensor built into my laptop. I can't just plug that in?? Soooooooo any suggestions??

Can you tell us more about the "sensor ". Can you give us the description and model number if possible.

Vista drivers should be either 32bit or 64bit.

Did you (clean) install the new system or upgrade from the old one?

Yea it's a HP Expresscard remote control that can be inserted in the side of the laptop. http://images.pricespider.com/product_static/220/1487/1487479.jpg. The product number is "396975-002" and the Serial Number is "P0821k9600 ". My laptop is a 32-bit Pavillion DV6700. My original OS was Vista Home Premium, Clean installed Windows 7 then downgraded to a clean install of Vista Ultimate. The remote worked fine with the original OS. I never tried the remote until now.

You did run the driver installer?

Look in Device Manager (type it into the Start -> Search box). Have the express card connected. Are there any devices with errors marked against them? If so, uninstall them, disconnect and reconnect the card (or even restart the computer). See if it automatically installs or the Add New Hardware wizard runs. If it doesn't install simply, you can try the various options in the ANH wiz.

Just a PS: HP don't give you a lot of leverage with their drivers. If you haven't very long ago installed Windows, I would suggest you think about installing the original version of the (HP) operating system, then look at upgrading that to the Ultimate version (then again, HP might make you get the upgrade from them).

Yes, I ran the driver installer directly from HP's website with no change. The remote is independent and does not have metal prongs to connect to the laptop. I checked all the devices in Device Manager along with the sub items and there were no errors. I ran the add new hardware manager and 1. It said it found no new hardware. 2. I clicked on "Infrared Devices" and hit next and highlighted "Standard Infrared Port" but the device highlighted was called "Serial cable using IRDA protocol ".....I didn't know how to proceed after that??? As far as upgrading from my original OS. The full version of Vista Ultimate has that option disabled.

Seeing what might have been installed originally would be what I would try to investigate. Did you get any driver or software disks with the laptop?

Search around the information in your system's support page. Is yours' a CTO model?
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/product?lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&product=3636595&os=2093&

I haven't used Infra Red devices on a laptop.

Install whatever drivers you can from that list, there is one " HP Digital/Analog TV Tuner Driver Software ".

Next step. try software. I see a reference to "HP MediaSmart TV Software ", but I can't see a download for your model.

They reference an upgrade (Windows 7) here:
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c01744960&cc=us&lc=en&dlc=en&product=3636595
They talk about the media software not working.

You will need to read through their information and look through the manuals
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/manualCategory?product=3636595&cc=us&lc=en&dlc=en&product=3636595

    They have forums
    http://h30434.www3.hp.com/psg/?category.id=Notebook&lang=en&cc=us
You can read or ask there (the problem will be manufacturer based, not Windows, you need to get the correct drivers or software).

Sorry bout the late response. I just stopped dealing with this issue for a bit. No I did not get any software or driver disc with the laptop but I did create a backup disc. Yes it's a CTO. Ultimately I did everything you Instructed me to do and none of those options worked. But I did join the HP forum as a last resort. Hopefully someone responds with a good answer. Thanks for your time. K.
