I am not sure if I am posting in the right place! If not please point me in the right direction

    The facts are as follows:

My wife is in the Ukraine: she is not computer literate, however she can read and speak English

I am in Australia. I am reasonably computer literate, but I cannot speak Russian. let alone understand, Russian software

We have been using Skype to communicate for quite a while now.

I use my own PC and broadband. However, wife forced to ubiquitous seedy Ukrainian "computer clubs" . These clubs are extremely unreliable: they inevitably manned by underpaid, under trained and disinterested staff whose main purpose is to take the dough from the punters and have no interest whatsoever in helping the customer.

My wife will finally be coming to Australia in May 2011, after her son has turned eighteen (long and painful story!)

In the meantime we have decided that she will buy a generic PC that comes without an O/S or any other preinstalled rubbish.

I will send her an English version of a Windows O/S and she will, I hope, be able to install it by simply following the instructions.

My question is this: once my wife has installed the O/S and established a broadband connection. is there software available that will allow me to take remote control of the PC so I can set it up for her?

BTW When she finally leaves for Australia, my wife will give the PC son to her son so they can in turn communicate through Skype

The software you require is built into Windows 7 - Remote Desktop ....

How to Enable Windows 7 to make a Remote Desktop Connection

but note that you will need to be running Windows 7 Pro or Ultimate to host a remote desktop connection. You wife can use any version of Windows 7.

Remote Desktop Connection: frequently asked questions

I am not sure as to the degree of control that Remote Desktop offers in terms of System settings, but no doubt someone else will chip in with that info.

As the current OS is Windows 7 I have moved your thread to that forum - you don't say which OS you are using.

Easiest to use is a free program like Team Viewer.

    Team Viewer

    Dear Tony.

    Thanks for everything!!

It is impossible to give you a simple answer!

My wife is living on a different planet called the Ukraine and she is buying an IBM Clone PC this week - looooooong story! She is TOTALLY computer illiterate. I am trying to get her to find some one who will set her PC up and teach her how to use email, MS Works, a browser and SKYPE

Meanwhile, I am struggling to work with two note books

The first is a Sony VAIO Notebook which has the accursed VISTA preinstalled and a plethora of VAIO faeces preinstalled :mad::mad::mad::mad: and, of course VISTA will not run all my software The system is totally corrupted and I need to use the recovery disk. Problem is that VISTA will not conduct a full disk back up which means I will loose data. I HATE VISTA!!!

My second notebook is an aging Compaq which came with XP Pro SP1a preinstalled. XP allows me to use my Omnipage, Abobe Professional 9 and other expensive software. Problem is that the O/S has automatically been upgraded to XP Pro Sp3 . The SP3 system is also hopelessly corrupted: but the original XP SP 1a installation disk cannot be used to repair SP3 and I cannot use XP SP 1a installation disk to create an SP3 on the fly disk.

For the moment I am having my wife install XP on her IBM clone PC.

As soon as I can buy suitable a new desk top without an O/S and sundry other preinstalled faeces, I will install Windows 7, she will install Widows 7 and I will then, hopefully, be able to use Team Viewer to help her when she inevitably gets into trouble.

    Peter
