This appears to describe WinXP Home/Pro as well as Win2000.

I like to set WinExplorer to show Detailed view, but My Computer, Network Neighborhood etc. to show Icon View. In the past this was simply accomplished by having having Detailed view settings apply all Folders etc., w Remember each folder's settings.

Then after opening My Computer, etc. I would change that windows view to ICON. This used to work fine once it was set, however in the last 2-3 months the OS never remembers the ICON views and reverts to some other view.

    So my question is:
    Anyone else experience this change?

    1. Is this due to the application of one of MS Windows security updates??

    2. Or some other security software (I use Spybot etc.)

Every clients WinXP or Win2000 machine that I work with shows the same change.

    Thanks,

    Dan

FWIW, I noticed a few weeks ago My Pictures aren't displaying in thumbnails, like they are set to, but in detail, like all my text files. So, I fooled around with the settings tonught, and damned if I can get them to work right, either. Everything opens to detail view, including My Pics, which is supposed to remember it's setting. I'm gonna play with this some more, but I'm just as curious as drdancm why the change, and if there is a fix. I'll post back if I find it.

    This may work :-

By default, WinXP will remember the view settings for the 400 most recently used folders. After that, XP will begin overwriting the data of the oldest folder and its view setting will be lost. First of all, open Windows Explorer and go to Tools, Folder Options, View, Advanced Settings and ensure that "Remember each folder's view settings" is checked.

The 400 folder information is stored in two registry keys:-
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell and
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam

To modify the registry to have more than 400 settings, go to Run, Regedit and highlight the first key (Shell), then Edit, New-Key-DWORD Value. Name this item "BagMRU Size" (without quotation marks, but with a space between BagMRU and Size). Double-click BagMRU Size, give it a Decimal value of 2000, then click OK.
Repeat the operation for the second key (ShellNoRoam)

You will have two "BagMRU Size" values equal to 0x000007d0 (2000). Close the registry and reboot. Windows XP will now remember 2000 folder view settings instead of 400.

It's even "worse" then that: Windows is designed to remember 400 different folder settings (200 local folders and 200 network folders, for a total of 400 folders), so you can hit that limit even more early then you might think.

I got this from Abraxas, and downloaded the reg file, and installed it.
    http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/regs_edits/bags8000.reg
Changed to "Reset all folders ", and checked "Remember each folders view settings. Changed folder settings to what I want and now they stay put. Hope this helps.

    Remember View Setting Problem SOLVED

    Thanks Guys !!!!

The Reg change you suggested has solved the problem, and also explains why the problem came about gradually (no. of folders increased beyond the quota).

It's going to save lots of time for me and everyone else that I'm going to tweak.

Very much appreciate your efforts. Thanks, very, very much!

    Dan
