My e-mail was used three times to send loads of spam. I changed the password and unchecked the option to remember my password, so I have to sign in each time. Does this don't-remember-it action help keep the spammers away, or is it useless? This is Windows Live Mail.

It should do as your Live Mail will be logged out. But if a baddie is going to have a go at your comp.... Neil.

It has likely nothing to do with remembering passwords...

Did you see copies of the mail send in your "Sent items "? My guess would be no. The spam was send with fake 'sender details', so you get the 'failed delivery' notices, but it wasn't actually sent by you / using your account.

I don't remember if they were in "Sent items." But I had a load of undeliverable returns three times. And the ISP talked about disconnecting my account if this continues. So far, it hasn't happened since January. So, if you're saying it wasn't actually sent through my account, then I guess changing and not-remembering the password doesn't matter.

SPAM-sending software usually let's you use any email address you like.

So, when a spammer uses your email address and sends it out to an invalid email address, the server's "whoever@wherever.com does not exist " reply will come back to your email account ... because the spam has your email address as the sender.

I thought the spammers had to get into my mail, which meant they had to know my password, which was remembered because the box was checked. But if they got around the password, then I might as well have it remembered and stop typing it every time. As for how they got my address---that's probably too long to go into here.

In order for others to communicate with you via email, they must have your email address. So, whom do they share it with, ether knowingly, by putting everyone's email address in the To: field, (instead of in BCC), or unknowingly, as in an infected computer?

It looks like the problem isn't necessarily in my computer. I'm going to save the password again so I don't have to type it each time. And I guess that wraps this up. Thanks for the comments.
