Logging into my internet account the first time, I passed on the chance to have my XP computer remember my account name and password. Thereafter, even if I check the box "remember me ", my computer doesn't. Is there a way to reset this so XP will ask me again if I want it to remember my account name and password?

    beagle268,

    Welcome to the forum.

I have moved your posting to the XP forum as the "Windows Server Systems" is mainly for server problems. I've also made it a little clearer that your problem concerns saving passwords by modifying the thread title.

Can you please tell us which browser you are using to connect to the internet: IE7?

Thanks for the reply. I thought I picked Windows XP, but as you can tell I am a real novice. The IE version is 6.0.2900.2180. I don't know why, since I have XP set to do automatic updates, so I would have thought I would have a more up-to-date verson.

There should be a connection object in your network connections that matches the internet connection. The easiest way to get to network connections is to go to Control Panel and double click on "Network Connections ".

Find the icon that matches your internet connection and right click on it. From the menu that pops up, select Properties and a Properties window should appear. Click on the options tab and on this you should find and entry labelled "Prompt for name and password, certificate, etc ". Put a tick in the box to the left of this entry and click on OK.

The next time you open a connection you should be prompted for a username and password.

Still unable to fix "remember me" problem

:( Thanks Reggie, but that did not work. I opened the network connections and there was no specific one that matched my internet connection. I right-clicked "local area connection" in the "high speed internet group" and selected Properties, but when the dialog box opened, there was no "options" tab. Any further suggestions or guidance?

Another way, if you go to Control Panel -> Internet Options -> Connections tab, you will see your current connection. Click Add and create a new connection...delete(remove) the old one if the new one works successfully.

    That's the way I do it :)

    beagle268,

I understood your post to mean the trouble was with remembering the password when logging into your internet based user account, and my post addresses that. ReggieB and mattman have addressed a connection password, such as the password supplied for a dialup connection to establish an internet connection. Two very different things. Please confirm which you needed.

Thanks Dave, yes, my method was for a dialup connection.

Thank you to all, I appreciate your help. Sorry I am not sophisticated enough to give a better description. I have comcast internet which, for no good reason I can figure, has a login for both internet and for access to mail. My IE remembers me when I log into the internet, but it won't remember me for the login to the mail, even though there is a check box to that says "Remember me ". I hope that more explicitly explains my problem.

    In IE, click Tools>Internet Options.
Click Delete Files, check the box for Offline Content and click OK.
Click Delete Cookies, click OK. Note: this will delete all stored cookies, requiring you to login at sites that have remembered your password.
    Click Content tab.
    Click AutoComplete.
    Click Clear Passwords, then OK.
Make sure the boxes 'Usernames and Passwords on forms' and 'Prompt me to save passwords' are checked, then click OK to exit Internet Options. Close all IE windows.
Now re-open IE and access your internet account and email, checking the boxes to remember.
Let us know if it remembers. ;)

:D That did it! Thanks again to Noah and everyone else who took the time. I'm sure that you all do not get thanked often enough for volunteering your assistance and expertise to those who need it. :)
