After reaching my limit with infection problems, I finally formatted the C: drive (back to blank!) and loaded ME from scratch. Everything appeared to have gone fine, but I can't get resolution other than the lowest (640 x 480?) and 16 colors. The rest are not available or offered. Period.

What is funny is that when Windows ME starts, the first ME Windows screen displayed appears to be the normal 1024 x 768 & 32-bit color. But when teh desktop appears, it is the ugly, large-icon variety circa 15 years ago.

What do I need to change to get my nice, higher resolution back?

Also, the reload did not recognize my network card at all, but I haven't worked on this yet - want to resolve the monitor/video problem first.

    Thanks!

First you need to install the motherboard drivers, if your network card is onboard this should be done by the driver install program.
    Then install the video drivers.
Don't know what motherboard or video card you have?
    Get Everest.

    Mark,
The ailing PC is my oldest Dell, and it came with Windows ME and the required drivers on a CD. It also had another (Dell) CD with more 'loaded as shipped' software. I attempted to have the system look in those, but it came back saying that the ones that were already running were the best, or something to that effect.

I was not familiar with the "Everest" software you recommended, but I looked it up - looks good. Do you know if I download it onto another PC whether I can then copy it to the ailing PC?

You see, I can't connect to the internet with the ailing PC until I find and load the network card driver. Again, this card came with the PC, and ME 'should' have recognized it and its driver 'should' have been loaded from the Dell CD. So much for 'plug-n-play', even though during installation, ME appeared to have taken quite sometime several instances in the 'plug-n-play' portion of the setup.

Thanks for your help, and if you can think of anything else (everyone 'invited'), please let me know.

    Alex

Yes you can do that - download the set up software that creates the Everest executable. PeteC has a "sticky" on the "Other Software" board for download site and info.
