My daughters Win 10 System was working perfectly then update 1709 came along.
It always hangs at 83%. Then restores the previous OS (and try's the 1709 again, big loop).
A lot of time wasted and still no access to win10.

I tried reinstalling 4 times from external USB with and without a product key, no luck.
The install works but after the install, I get as far as Starting services, Setting up devices,
and the Getting Ready message, and Windows needs to reboot. It never finishes the reboot
and i,m left with a blank screen....

Oh, I also replaced the Harddrive with a new one - same result.

Looking for suggestions for what I can try next.

    Thanks,
    Clif

Was that USB-drive created using the Media Creation Tool?

After the failures, has the system been rolled back to the previous version and is working OK?

If "yes" on both questions, try initiating an upgrade from within Windows 10. You can choose to keep personal programs and files or to keep nothing. If the latter, copy personal files she'd hate to lose to an external drive. Well, I'd backup important files no matter which choice I'd make. Disconnect all peripheral hardware and disconnect from the internet. Find the executable (setup.exe) on the USB-drive and run it.

If it works, reconnect to the internet and restart. This will trigger Windows Update for additional updates. Next reconnect peripheral hardware, one by one.

Fingers crossed, it has worked for me in several "hopeless" cases.

Oh ... ... I noticed this now. Is the new harddrive empty? If so, you can't start the upgrade from within Windows. Details of the computer should be stored on Microsofts Activation Servers. That includes the license key and when asked for during the clean installation, skip that step and let it continue. It should activate automatically. Again, everything disconnected, also from the internet. Worry about updates and peripheral hardware later.

yes, media creation tool was used to create the USB.

Previous version not working, i think, since it won't boot up).
I did a clean install (both with and without a product key).

Will try a clean install without internet plug.

    Only peripheral hardware is internet.

HD was empty, now has last install on it. - i still use the setup.exe from USB.

    Will post results.

    Update: ,

Since this PC has been through Win7, Win 8, Win8.1 and Win10, I went and bought Win 10 (full) with
latest version i could find (1703).
Did a clean install onto a cleaned HD - no problems with install. Install without internet plugged in works fine.
Did the update (as if i had a choice) and it got to 88% before hanging up again. Then same as
    before - restoring previous system.

I'm at wits end as to what it could be......

Assuming that it is not the computer in your profile - system details, do you have any details on make and model?

In addition to that, which updates, if any, were installed successfully?

Can you identify if it is a "windows" problem or a "driver" problem?

Many posts as and when thoughts flash by. You said version 1703. If I were in your situation, I would reinstall from the newly purchased DVD (?), offline and when done, install the upgrade to 1709 from the USB-stick. I would also download the most recent cumulative (not the "delta") monthly update (KB4056892) to a different USB-stick (don't mess with the one with the upgrade) in advance an install that one too prior to letting it connect to the internet.

You could also try installing KB4056891 (for version 1703) immediately after the reinstallation from the DVD. This update corresponds to KB4056892 (for version 1709) and they are not interchangable. You would have to install the upgrade to 1709 from the USB-stick and KB4056892 afterwards.

You could also try it immediately without reinstalling the OS from square one (hoping that the failed updating has not done any "damage").

    I'll give it a try.

    a. KB4056891 into 1703
    b. Install 1709 from stick.
    c. Install KB4056892
All of above without internet plug. :)

KB4056892 bugs: Install fails, browser crashes, PC freezes, and more

This link shows more systems hanging (bricked, new term?) up.
Uncross fingers! No joy in mudville tonight.
Looks like i have a good data backup repository that won't get on line.
I'll wait for another big release from MS before i try again. Maybe they'll have the bugs fixed.
I understand that security update was to cover Windows from the last 2 big viruses. Maybe they
    rushed it a bit.

Thanks for all the help, Christer!
    talk in the future....

As I understand it, that was the usual monthly update (fixing all issues in one update rather than like in the good old days, each problem in a separate update) but it was "rushed a bit" (a week or so) to fix a specific issue or two that actually was/is hardware related. On "patch tuesday" a week or so later, there was no new cumulative update, hence my conclusion that it was released "before it's time".

If it still had been "the good old days", the update causing the problems could have been skipped and the rest installed. Now, everything fails. I've said it before and I say it again, I don't like the way Windows 10 manages updates, leaving the user totally out of control! I simply don't understand what the benefits are? I mean, designing and programming several updates only to pass them on to someone else who will integrate them into a single package? What could go wrong ... ... ?

I think that you "rushed" marking the thread as solved a bit. I've uncrossed my fingers but you still have the problem, right? Which of the three steps failed, a, b or c?

    ... and you're welcome ... :) ... !

    the culprit was "c".

I'm at the computer club now and re-doing the media creation tool to USB.
Its to cold to go outside so i'll try it again this PM.

You could try installing KB4054517, the cumulative update from december 2017 and if that one gets installed OK, KB4056892, the delta update (only the "additions" after the previous one) from january 2018.
