Hi.I Bought a S/hand PC setup with WinXP Pro on it , has been OK but went to download from Microsoft and they said it is unregistered. I have bought a new XP Pro Academic set. Can I install it over the top or do I have to format and reinstall everything again. Also I have a PC with Win ME on ( registered version) , but the "Blue screen blues have got to me. can I load it over the top of that??. Here's hoping . Des. :(

    Hi demon!

If you do a repair installation from the legitimate CD, you will be promted for the new License Key and I assume that you will have to activate the installation, following normal procedure.

(Do not do the repair from the recovery console but use the option to repair instead of installing clean. The second option is offered a few screens later.)

Don't ever upgrade a troublesome operating system. That is especially true for Windows ME. It must function as close to flawlessly as possible. If not, take the time to reinstal from square one. If the "academic set" is an upgrade, you will be asked for the old CD as proof of a previous version.

Personally, I migrated to XP from ME. ME was tweaked and worked OK but I didn't even consider an upgrade but took XP from square one.

Hi. Christer, Thanks for the reply. I have a copy disc of full XP Pro ( that is on my PC) that I can use. It looks as though I should format the PC with ME and then install my copy disc and then put on the legal upgrade. It looks as if Microsoft has just started validating systems before down loads. I just did a download on the ME it seems that is legal. But the ME is P---ing me off with the blue screens. Thanks again , I will post my progress but may be a week or two Cheers Des.

    Hi demon!

I don't think you will have to install anything before installing the "academic upgrade ". (I'm not sure because "academic sets" are usually not "the full product ".) A normal upgrade can be used for a clean installation. You would be prompted for the original WinME CD as proof of a previous version which is eligible for an upgrade.

Try installing clean from the "academic upgrade" ...... ...... it would only take a few minutes to find out if it proceeds and if not ...... :( ...... take the long route.
