I am wanted to replace my old harddrive with a new one. The one I wish to remove has my WIndows XP Home installation on it.

When I replace the new drive, will I be able to reinstall, activate and continue to use my WIndows XP (updates etc) on the new drive without any problems? I have a legit Windows XP Home SP2 upgrade CD, but am not sure if I will be faced with problems, inconveniences.

Thanks in advance for any guidance, suggestions and passed along knowledge and experiences!

Yes you can, but you might not have to.

When I purchased a new hard drive a couple of years ago, it came with a
utility that lets you "clone" the old drive to the new drive ( western digital) .

Just install the new drive as "D" and install the software on "C" and clone it.
After you are done, switch the cables and make the new drive "Câ€

    Worked great on my system

    Thanks Sven ...

Thanks for your quick reply. Unfortunatey, I'm not installing a new drive ... it's an older bigger one from another computer.

I'm not sure, if I had the option, if I would clone or not. There is a possibility that there is so much malicious damage and inefficiencies, I'd prefer to start fresh.

I was just worried that because of Windows anti-piracy efforts that they would consider it a 2nd installation and deny me activation. Same computer, just different hardware (drive)

If the new install will not activate over the internet use the phone no. given to manually activate and explain to the good Microsoft person that your hard drive failed and you have replaced it.

Given that you are only replacing the drive there is every chance that internet activation will work as the hardware footprint of the other components has not changed.

A clean install is to be preferred.
