After running Belarc Advisor, I found a very long list of "Installed Microsoft Hotfixes" (149 to be exact), of which 8 were tagged "Reinstall! ". No explanation was shown, and I have no idea how these presumably failed Windows Updates may have affected my system.

How do I go about reinstalling them? I am listing the 8 failures by "KB" number and original installation dates, in the order they were listed.

Does Windows Update show them? If not, I'd ignore Belarc.

Yes, ignore Belarc. It's quite possible that later updates removed or replaced what it says needs to be reinstalled.

Thank you, Arie and TonyT. It turned out that at least some of the supposed Microsoft Update irregularities were connected with my problem of Internet Explorer 8 crashing 100% of the time, which I removed by use of a Microsoft Support bulletin dealing with that IE 8 problem. This in turn removed some of the "Reinstall!" notations from my Belarc Advisor listing, and in response to your advice, I found it very safe to ignore the rest of the Belarc indications as false alarms. In any case, I was able to get this very sick computer with the Windows XP running better than it has been in years!
