What is the size of your C:\Windows\System.Dat file (it is a Hidden file)?

Scanreg /fix usually hangs up on a System.Dat file that large. I would recommend a good registry cleanup, uninstalling old programs you no longer use will reduce some of it's size.
Have you tried Scanreg /Opt before doing the /fix?

Thanks for the info, will try the Scanreg /opt. I have already used regclean, Easycleaner, and jv16 power tools.

Still not working fully!!! Microsoft Registry Checker

Did scanreg /opt and it works ok. Did scanreg /fix and it works for the user.dat, but for the system.dat it still hangs at the "checking the system registry structure.

Here is a thing to try, as you may have a developing bad sector on your drive, right where the System.Dat file is written. Defrag never gets a chance to move that file around, the following can move it for you, but this cannot be done in Windows.
Restart in Dos Mode, or boot up to the Start Menu and choose Commmand Prompt Only.
    Do these commands.

    attrib -r -s -h c:\windows\system.dat
    copy c:\windows\system.dat c:\windows\system.da0
    copy c:\windows\system.da0 system.dat

Type a Y that you want to overwrite.

Markp62, tried the fix but still hangs, system.dat is now 9,121 from 9,389 Kb probable still too large. I got rid of some old programs.

If there is a problem with the disk try scandisk /autofix.
