Have needed to patch the registry, and seem successful in what I have done.
One observation is that there exists at numerous places paths which do not appear in the usual format c:\WINDOWS\......... , but include the query character so c?\WINDOWS\........
As I do not detect problems remaining, am I correct in assuming that such notation, although in other terms unusual, is within the registry a correct form of entry?
I have been unable to find any documentation on this point.

Question mark "?" is considered a wildcard symbol much the same as "* ". Yes it is acceptable.

I believe the difference is the "?" is used to take the place of 0 or 1 character. The "*" is used to take the place of more than one character.

Goddez1 is quite correct, those are wildcards or variables are holdovers from the MsDos operating systems...

More on variables here, some of these are found in the registry.
