When starting up my PC I get several messages (8 to be precise!) stating the following:

Could not load or run XXXX specified in the registry. Make sure the file exists on your computer or remove the reference from the registry.

Windows cannot find XXXX. Make sure your typed the name correcty and then try again.

The XXXX's appear as chinese type looking characters! I cant notice any obvious problems but I am concerned as I know the registry is important to your PC and that you should not touch it!

Anyone have any ideas what this is and how I can solve it?

    Thanks
    zism :p

Welcome to the BBS zism. :)

Registry errors possibly due to a failed or incorrect uninstall. In my sig. I'd suggest downloading EasyCleaner and Regseeker and run both to clean out some debry from your registry. Use the Unnescessary files cleaner in EasyCleaner as well.

Run an up to date full virus scan.

Also from my sig. download Ad-aware and Spybot. Update both programmes and then let both (one at a time) do full scans of your system, and delete all that they find. Use the immunize feature of spybot as well. Update and use these programmes every week or two.

I'd do full virus and spyware scans before cleaning the registry as suggested above.

If the registry error was very serious XP should have attempted a repair or load a backup version. So your problem is probably a programme install/uninstall error.

Yes, get HiJackThis and run the scan. Analyze the results to see where the program is being called from and how it can be deleted.

Have you installed the Input Method Editors (IME's) for any other languages? These occasionally cause this type of problem with indecipherable characters.

Install Startup Control Panel and look for IME's starting. If you don't need them, you can disable or remove them from the startup.

This isn't my baliwick (area of least ignorance) but I'd tag these two for removal while waiting for someone with more insight:

    F3 - REG:win.ini: load=???
    ?, ?
    F3 - REG:win.ini: run=???
    ?, ?

Alternately, you can go right to the win.ini file, open it, and delete the run= and load= lines. XP does not use those lines to load things although some legacy proggy might. Some Spyware might too.

zism - you still have some stuff showing up that indicates more problems. We need to see a new Hijackthis log but make sure you have version 1.98.2 and if not, download it and replace the one you have now.

Also, there should be quite a bit more in the HJT log file and you need to post all of it.

I'm moving this thread to the security/spyware removal section.

Well, this one was fun and I'm very glad you posted it. Most times I can simply give a shopping list and say 'remove all of these' but not this time.

Run HJT again and scan. Then the items with no comment should be removed.

The items in green are optional. Not bad stuff but all things that you do not need running at startup and that simply add to system sludge by starting processes that you may not need at all. I'd get rid of all the entries - it does nothing except prevent the things from running when you first start the PC.

The items with detailed comments are yours to deal with as you see fit.

    R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [websx] C:\Program Files\websx\int113777.exe -auto
A baddie and I've seen references to it as part of a stand-alone adult **** site silent dialer and also as part of a remote control trojan. I'd prefer to leave confirmation to one of our malware experts (and that is not me) but take a look at This site that lists removal instructions. Just don't do anything with this one until someone else confirms what it is and how to remove it.

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [PHIME2002A] C:\WINNT\System32\IME\TINTLGNT\TINTSETP.EXE /IMEName

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [OSS] c:\winnt\system32\ossproxy.exe -boot
Part of Nettsetter - a "market research" program intended to track your Internet usage and buying habits. You may have loaded it as a download accelerator which it really IS NOT. More details Here. If you want it, it is not really harmful to the PC but it does add sludge to your system. If you didn't intend to invite it to spy on you, click on Start -> Run and enter "%WinDir%\SYSTEM\NSCheck.exe /uninstall" (where %windir% is the Windows directory - C:\Windows or C:\Winnt) followed by enter - this removes all registry entries and a box appears saying "uninstall successful. Find and delete the files nscheck.exe, ossproxy.exe.rvt & ossproxy.exe

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MediaFace Integration] C:\Program Files\Fellowes\MediaFACE 4.0\SetHook.exe

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [LoadQM] loadqm.exe
    What Microsoft Says
    What Others Say
Not malware but maybe sludgeware so based on the links, decide if you want it running at startup or not

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [IMJPMIG8.1] C:\WINNT\IME\imjp8_1\IMJPMIG.EXE /Spoil /RemAdvDef /Migration32

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SiSUSBRG] C:\WINNT\SiSUSBrg.exe
SiS USB Registry Patch File - fixes the undetectable problem with SiS USB controller on Windows XP. Not sure why you need it running at every startup though. Once a patch is applied, I'd think you'd be done with it. This is another one I'd like a 2nd opinion on.

    O4 - Startup: Reboot.exe
Really not sure about this one.

    O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\OSA.EXE
    O4 - Global Startup: WinZip Quick Pick.lnk = C:\Program Files\WinZip\WZQKPICK.EXE

Supposed to be part of CoolMP3 which I would not want and appears to be busted anyway so I'd remove it.

These 016 items could all be fine but given the other issues, chances are that at least one is a baddie and I'm too lazy to search. I'd remove them all since any legit ones will be added back the next time you visit a site that needs them so the only effect of removal will be a slight slowing of your next connection while a new .cab file is loaded.

Remove it per the instructions on the link given.

Reboot.exe is not generally a valid file or app for XP. Did you install it?. Search for the file and check it's properties. Give us as much info about it as possible.

Thanks for all the help and advice. Have made the recommended changes and have run again and this is what I now get:

    Reboot.exe I found was: C:\WINNT\PREFETCH\reboot.exe-26422ADG.pf

So all I need now (I think!) is advice on the highlighted in red ones (as per NEWT's advice) :

I'd just run HJT and check the registry entry for removal. The patch stuff will still be there but it just won't be running at startup. If it causes USB problems later, easy enough to put the entry back into the registry but I seriously doubt that will be needed.

You should print this out and/or save it to text where you can access it in safe mode. If you save to text you can copy/paste the below filenames in the search window. ;)

Download and save the attached text file to your desktop. Right click and rename to ALRem.reg

Scan with HJT and fix this entry.

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [websx] C:\Program Files\websx\int113777.exe -auto

    Thanks noahdfear

sorry I have a few questions!

Download and save the attached text file to your desktop. Right click and rename to ALRem.reg

    what attached text file?

Scan with HJT and fix this entry.

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [websx] C:\Program Files\websx\int113777.exe -auto

Double click the ALRem.rg file to merge into the registry.

    where is this file?

Right click My Computer and choose properties. On system restore tab, check the box to turn off. OK out.

Go to start>run and type msconfig, hit enter. On the boot.ini tab, check the box next to /safeboot and OK. Yes to restart. This will restart your computer in safe mode. Logon to you user account.

Now in safe mode, you will need to show hidden files and folders, as well as system files.

how do I get into safe mode and how do I get out?

    thanks once again

    No need to apologize. :)
At the bottom of my last posting, just above my signature, you will see an 'Attached Files' quote box. Click the ALRem.txt link and choose save. In the opening save dialog box, click 'Desktop' in the left pane then click save.
ALRem.rg is a typo. I was referrring to ALRem.reg, the text file that you are to download and rename.
    Just follow the instructions given above;

    To get into safe mode
To get out of safe mode
