Recently I started getting the message that windows has found a problem with registry and will restore from a backup.
I have reinstalled Win 98se over the top but I still have the problem.
Some help will be greatly appreciated.

Have you recently had Viri or disk errors, even if fixed?

Do the steps exactly and in the order given.

    Cleanups
These are for 95 98 only!

Boot to DOS (not shutdown to DOS). While booting hit F8 repeatedly to startup menu. Chose "command prompt only ".

Type these commands exactly hit enter at the end (do not type the notes that are in parenthesis like this).

del c:\*.swp (may get file not found, is ok)
    del c:\windows\*.swp
    deltree c:\windows\shelli*.*
deltree c:\windows\temp\*.* (answer yes to all) "ALL "
    deltree c:\windows\tempor~1\*.*
    deltree c:\windows\history\*.*
    deltree c:\windows\spool\printers\*.*

    scanreg /fix
    wait for finish

    scanreg /opt

Now hit CTRL ALT DEL to reboot the computer.

Hit F8 again do not allow full mode to boot yet.

In safe mode do the following.

    Configure CleanMgr to max settings
    Go to Start-Run and type

    cleanmgr /sageset:1
The above need only be ran once (these settings will be remembered as the default until another sageset is ran).

It will present a menu select all, then

    Go to Start-Run and type

    cleanmgr /sagerun:1
As long as /sageset above has been ran on this computer from now on the /sagerun is the only thing that needs to run.

Now run scandisk with surface scan, yes it will take a while, but you must be sure there are no disk problems!

When this completes do a full virus scan, make sure the virus scanner is maxed to deepest scan.

start-run-msconfig-startup uncheck all startups except explorer, systray and virus scanner.

Now shutdown and restart again F8 to safe mode. Did it need to repair the registry this time. If it did then post back now.

If not, boot to full mode then do nothing but shutdown and restart again in full mode. Does rebooting from full mode cause the registry problem.

Enough for now do, the above and report back.

Grant - did you make any hardware , memory or power supply changes right before you started getting this? Any changes to your Bios setup?

Mike's recommended procedure is great. It is also critically important to note anything that might have been changed just prior to the onset of this registry problem, if anything you are aware of was changed.

    ;)

Registry Checker Continues to Detect Registry Damage

    CAUSE
This problem can occur if there is defective memory in your computer. A defective memory chip may damage the registry in memory. The Windows-based (or protected-mode) version of Registry Checker (Scanregw.exe) scans the registry in memory for damage.

    10-4 to Steve

Yes this is actually the most likely culprit.

But a disk error on the disk in the location of the registry or a Virus can cause this.

Hence my advice to boot to safe mode twice then full mode twice to see if there is a reoccurence in full mode.

If you did not find a Virus or reports of repaired bad sectors on the scan disk then this is the next step if you still have the problem.

If you get a positive on the link provided by Steve, then the next step is to remove the case remove and reseat the memory firmly. If there are multiple sticks I would reverse if only 2, and rotate if more than 2.

BTW: I was tired and sleepy last night but I should have asked. Do you have any windows problems when you do fix and boot on up?

    re Registry problem

I've submitted a new thread asI realized I don't have the problem if MSN Messenger is NOT used in a previous session.
I've also replaced the RAM with 2 x 128 sticks.
