I have a win2K computer, with 2 accounts one is a normal user account, the other a admin account. Everything works fine on the admin account, but when i log in with the user account it says error loading the registry, and after that some programs hang the system is generally unstable. I don't have any of these problems with the admin account. I tried deleting and recreating the user account but it didn't work, same problem. I also tried reinstalling windows 'over the top'. didn't work either. Short of reformating and starting from scratch is there another way to fix this problem.

    Thanks for your help

Try this just to make sure you have a clean start. After deleting the bad account, start~run~regedit then navigate to
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList

Click on the plus sign to expand the list of profiles. They will be some sort of long number string. Single click on each one and then look at the col. on the right for the profilepath. When you find the one for the account that was causing problems, delete it. This will remove the security ID for the account.

Check the remaining ones to see if you have others that point to the same profile. There should not be but it is possible given the problems you are having. Delete any additional ones that point to the same user account.

Close the registry editor and start~run~cmd to open a command/DOS window then
chkdsk /r and ENTER. You will be told chkdsk cannot run so answer Y(es) to running it at next boot then reboot.

When the chkdsk completes and the PC finishes loading (may take a while) then
start~run~sfc /scannow and ENTER. You will need your 2K CD if the system file check finds any bad files and needs to replace them.

I'm not sure the above will solve your problem but it certainly won't make things any worse and will give a known clean system before trying any other tweaks.

Please post back with your results.

Try running both Ad-aware & Spybot. Both links are in my signature.
