"Word Document" has disappeared from my "new" context menu. Automated hacks don't get it back, so I'm trying to do it manually. I use Office XP and the 2007 converter program for .docx.

If I go to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.doc\Word.Document.8\ShellNew, the FileName data is "winword8.doc" (no quotes). But Nullfile has no data, I think it's supposed to be a string of numbers. Does anyone have a similar setup, and can tell what the data is supposed to be?

FWIW, I have the automated reg hacker ShellNewHandler.exe, and Word is checked, but Word is not showing up in the context menu for whatever reason.

Windows 7 Ultimate (with all updates), running Microsoft Office 2007 Ultimate (with all updates).

When I drill down to "HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.doc\Word.Document.8\ShellNew ", there is nothing there.
    Name
    (Default)

    Type
    REG_SZ

    Data
    (value not set)

That's the item for Microsoft WordPad.

The office 2007 word entry is here:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\.docx\Word.Document.12\ShellNew

To disable, just add a "-" after ShellNew.

Spy, Arie....I'm getting there, you're really helpful, but more questions: keep in mind I have Word 2002 installed, with the 2007 converter.

Spy....my ShellNew folder also contains NewFile...REG_SZ...winword8.doc and NullFile....REG_SZ....empty

Arie...I note you're in a different directory, SOFTWARE not ROOT, altho the entries look the same in both directories. If I add NullFile to ShellNew, it works! (ie, an entry for DOCX shows up on the context menu.) But, when I try to generate a Word document, it opens in DOCX thinking I don't have the converter...I'd like to get it to open in doc like it did before...now I have to go thru a couple of dialog boxes to get to doc. I tried adjusting doc with your DOCX instructions, but it didn't seem to work. With all due respect, I think the 8 is referring to Word 2002, not Wordpad.

    Many thnx to you both.........Chris

Windows XP Pro / MS Office Pro 2003 (both with ALL updates).

    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.doc\Word.Document.8\ShellNew

    also shows:
    Name
    (Default)

    Type
    REG_SZ

    Data
    (value not set)
    Then under that is:
    Name
    Filename

    Type
    REG_SZ

    Data
    winword8.doc
    I also see HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.doc\Word.Document.6\ShellNew
    Name
    Filename

    Type
    REG_SZ

    Data
    winword.doc
    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.doc\WordDocument\ShellNew
    Name
    Filename

    Type
    REG_SZ

    Data
    winword2.doc
    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.doc\WordPad.Document.1\ShellNew
    Name
    NullFile

    Type
    REG_SZ

Yes, you set the items that appear on the "New" context menu at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\. I know, I've done this for years with my software.

You're right... although it refers to any version of Word. It's the entry responsible for the .doc class.

So for .doc just check your registry:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\.doc\Word.Document.8\ShellNew

There should be nothing in the ShellNew 'folder', except the (Default) entry.

Although I'm working with Office 2007 here, which defaults to a .docx on the "New" menu.
