Everday when I boot up I get the error message from Registry Checker that "Windows encountered an error accessing the registry. Windows will restart & repair ". After repair, if I reboot within 3 or less hours, then I don't get the message. But any longer than this and I will. Is this something to do with my lower resources after computer been on for awhile. I read the message from kyroy Mar 8 and mflynn's reply Mar 8 and I did all that but I still get the message. After I did scanreg /fix it said that System.dat successully fixed but still same problem next day. I believe my problem also started when I downloaded Critical Updates on Oct 18. I want to disable items in my Start-up to free resources, but everytime it reboots to repair the Registry, then I'm back to the same enabled start-up items.

    Steelwool,
It seems that on booting up, Windows finds errors in the registry
and then replaces the registry from one of the RB00* files - which is also not clean.
I think I would remove all RB00* files, do a scanreg /fix in DOS
    and hope for the best.
    regards

I think you figured out the problem exactly Merlin. Thanks. I've noticed since I posted this message that I have a registry back-up called Rbbad.cab with a lot more KB than the others and after Windows reboots to repair the registry error, it uses this same Rbbad.cab file again. The most recent registry back-up is always called Rbbad.cab. Is it safe for me to just delete these .cab files using Windows Explorer? Should I put a Registry back-up on my desktop first?

Delete all the rb00? and rbbad files using Windows Explorer, then go the Start button, select Run. Type in scanregw, then hit enter. When it scans the registry, it will prompt to backup, click on Yes. That will be your backup.
When the error window appears on bootup, press CTRL+ALT+DEL at the same time, a window will open up, highlight the Windows Registry Checker with the mouse and click on End Task. You'll get another window saying it is not responding, click on End Task again. This will save you from going around in circles.

Just remember that when you do this, you no longer have a backup of a registry that has actually been used to start windows.

That is, the one you are taking a backup of, may not be able to be used to boot windows. Odds are probably slim, but....

Thanks for all your help. I didn't end up doing any of these recommendations as it turned out that the problem disappeared without following the recommendations. But I'll print out your responses as you never know if it'll end up happening again. Unfortunately I don't know what ended up fixing the problem as I did so many things that it's hard to pinpoint what resolved the problem. It may have been because we had 2 MSN versions installed. Got rid of one & had to repair the newer version. I also downloaded & ran Spybot Search & Destroy which found & repaired a lot of spyware problems, including Brilliant Digital & KLEZ worm (WinkB6). (but I didn't enable any register repairs yet). Since removing, resources have consistently stayed high and latest registry backup is not called Rbbad anymore.
