Just today I downloaded and ran Registry Mechanic from PC Tools.

The first run found 25 illegal entries in the registry.

Some were left over from Software un-installs. Some were from things that I had moved from one place to the other.

Many of them were useless shortcuts.

The software DOES make its own backups before doing the work.

Overall I am seing A GREAT improvement in the overall operation of Windows XP. Especially in SPEED which makes sense as it is no longer looking for stuff that is not there.

I used to use Norton WinDoctor for this but I can not find it. ( I think I did too good a job of housecleaning. LOL

    I forgot one IMPORTANT thing.

I made very sure that I had a recent Restore Point before doing anything.

Now I will wait a day or two and then clean them up also if all is OK.

    Hi BillyBob!

Can you provide a link to anything written on Registry Mechanic? A tutorial or something like that would be a good starting point for the less experienced users.

Before I did the reg cleaning when I would click on Start the menu would spit and sputter before coming fully up.

I strongly think it was because it was looking for stuff that was not there.

    It no longer does that.

I normally don't condone registry cleaners, but seeing that you are an experienced user, and it seems to have given noticable improvements, I'll have to change my way of thinking and look into that.
Thanks for the info! Very much appreciated

    You are quite Welcome.

But. The most important thing that I can stress.

Make VERY sure you do have a recent Restore point BEFORE running the program.

And DO NOT trust Microsoft here. MANUALLY check and makes sure.

Be careful what you do with RM! I messed up my PC using it (quite a while ago).
Hopefully they have made changes to prevent that from happening......

I am going to take ( right or wrong ) the liberty of rephrasing that EXCELLENT warning a little.

"Be careful what you do with ANY SOFTWARE. I messed up my PC using it (quite a while ago). Hopefully they or the user has made changes to prevent that from happening...Not all software is compatable with all machines. "

I also messed up ( a couple of times ) using Norton WinDoctor. Thank you MS for the RB00X.cab files in Win98SE.

I have also found in the past that it might depend on what is running in the background.

No Version of Windows runs alone. I know some (a family member) who would like to have it that way but, it will never happen. It takes a combination of Windows( the OS ), The User, software and hardware. Hardware may even start out with the MB and its components. And they all need to be compatable with each other. If just one of them messes up all kinds of nasty things can happen.

In my own personal case I find The User to be the biggest trouble maker. He seems to be always pulling the stunt " Try this or that. "

Gotta go refill the Coffe Cup.
