    With a properly maintained system, my answer would be no. I have had to use them on other's computers (to save time) but have never liked them and they can be very dangerous with inexperienced hands.

    I agree with both wildfire and dobhar - not needed in general usage - can do more harm than good and you will not see any difference in performance after using :) There are odd exceptions - example to clear out references to an uninstalled program which may prevent a later version from loading.
