I have been looking around at some of the other posts here (I figured it was a good way to learn :) ). What I was wondering is - would it be a good idea to download and run a registry cleaner? I have never done this before so I want to make sure I can't mess anything up!

    Thanks

Yes, it is a good idea.
I would recommend the one from M$, Regclean, as the easiest and safest for folks new to cleaners. You just start up, let it scan, then click on Fix Errors when the button appears. Keep it into it's own folder, as it automatically keeps backups. BTW, if you were to double click these backups, they are put back into the registry.
Easy Cleaner and Regseeker will find many more entries, and it is not always safe remove to everything they find. With these I would recommend for someone new removing only the CLSID, Type Library, and Invalid ActiveX/COM entries, and Shared DLL, these usually have red type showing on these. Deleting unused file types can be fatal.

Easy Cleaner by Toni Arts is another good one. Actually, it's better to "underclean" than "overclean. "

    Reg cleaner

JV16 used to be one of the best, but currently Regsupreme is the leading cleaner. Outstanding to use, and it requires you to make a backup before it will fix any registry problems. Not free but worth the $29.00 Macecraft charges for it. It has three stages of cleaning and takes about 70 seconds or so to process registry items for deletion.

Easy Cleaner by Toni Arts has always done me well. It now has a Version 2. The program is free. But to get it directly from Toni Arts requires a fee to join the site. The program is available from other download sites for free.

The only problem I've ever encountered with Easy Cleaner is that "HELP" has to be entered into the IGNORE BOX with the Registry Cleaner. If not, it will disconnect the HELP files for Windows ME/XP. There is a patch to fix.

But it is a great free program that has kept my computer running for years without a hitch.
