    dormat c:
    (space between format & c:)

Then change directories from A: to the CDROM drive, which will probably be F:

    windows98 problem

not sure you understood my problem. I just want to increase the size of the icons in the lower right corner of the taskbar. Some how they are smaller than before, and I find nothing in "help" folders that address this.

FYI - Shift + F5 at the Win 98 start up menu takes you to the A: prompt - see note at bottom of screen

    Roxey
How?? - by formatting the drive or by somehow deleting all the files.

If you formatted the drive - great - just boot from the Win 98 Start up disk - at the menu screen select option 1 'Start with CD-ROM support'

When the floppy has loaded a few files and returns to the A : prompt note which drive letter has been assigned to your CD-ROM drive.

Change to that drive, put the Win CD in that drive and type 'Setup' and hit the enter key and sit back while Windows installs.

If you want to format the drive, boot from the Start up disk, let it run as before to the A; prompt.

At the A: prompt type , without the quotes 'fdisk' and follow the instructions.

Create a logical DOS partition, then from the A: prompt format it - format c:

After format reboot from the startup disk and follow the first procedure outlined above.

    Hope this is clear enough.

    Say WHAT ??????????

HELP !!!! Now I am THORUOGHLY confused.

Unless the machine being referrd to is an OEM ( HP, Dell Etc which do some strange things ) I have never seen a menu other than to choose with or without CRDOM support when booting to the 98 Startup Disk. And I do not recall anything about using and F# key. Just move the highlight down and hit enter.

HHMMMMM !! Is there a choice for command prompt there ? I do not have a 98 SUD with the menu on it so I can't check. ( My original has decided to go South ) and I have not made a new one.

BTW. Is the machine in question set to boot from the A: drive first

And if the C: drive has been formated and you try to boot to the HD you should get " Invalid System Disk " Or go it should go to the A: drive and boot if there is a disk in it.

This is not making sense to me at all.

At the A: prompt type , without the quotes 'fdisk' and follow the instructions.
Create a logical DOS partition, then from the A: prompt format it - format c:

Why would FDISK be needed if the HD already has a C: drive on it ?

Plus a reboot best be put in between [ create a partition ] and [ format ]

Also if the HD has more than one existing partition you had best leave FDISK out of the picture entrely.

Well, I just solved part of my mystry. SHIFT F5 and other things are at the bottom of the 98 SUD screen.

I guess I just never paid attention as it winds up at the a:\ prompt anyway so I just let it go.

OK. Now what you need is a 98 Startup disk so you can get to the CDROM.

The instructions are basicly fine but it is not that easy.

1st- off you need to have the Product key handy.

2nd- Unless you have the FULL version CD you need to have a Win3.1 disk(s) or a 95 CD handy for proof of ownership of a previous version.

3rd- there is need to watch and make sure Windows installs into the default C:\Windows folder.

4th- There is need to watch during the install for places where the install may ask for some hardware driver disks. ANSWER NO to all of these. Let Windows go with the default drivers the first time around.

    roxey

You are VERY frustrated. I know as was there once.
