Please forgive me, I am a computer idiot looking for assistance. I have been having problems with my computer since the first week I had it. The first symptoms were the zipzappromo pop-ups, then my home page being redirected. A friend installed spybot and ad-aware, also registry mechanic. That got rid of the pop-ups, but my home page is still being redirected, and every time I run spybot and ad-aware they continuously find tracking cookies. I downloaded hijack this today, and I will post results. I am so frustrated, and feel helpless. If someone could try and help, I would be eternally indebted!

    Welcome to WindowsBBS jenice :)

You have HijackThis in a temporary folder and it still hasn't been unzipped. Download HijackThis.exe from here. Save it to a permanent folder (I create a new folder in C:\ named HJT).

Scan again with HijackThis and place a check next to the following entries. Close ALL other windows and click fix.

    R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - ~4D25F926-B9FE-4682-BF72-8AB8210D6D75} - (no file)
    R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - ~CFBFAE00-17A6-11D0-99CB-00C04FD64497} - (no file)
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {4D25F921-B9FE-4682-BF72-8AB8210D6D75} - C:\Program Files\MyWaySA\SrchAsDe\1.bin\deSrcAs.dll
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.2_03\bin\jusched.exe

    Reboot.

Open C:\Program Files and delete the folder MyWaySA.
Open My Computer, right click Local Disk C: and choose properties, then disk cleanup. Check all boxes except compress old files and click OK. Be patient, this may take a while.

Download and install SpywareBlaster. Enable all protections, check for updates and enable them too. Then download IESpyad.exe, double click to extract (it extracts to C:\IESpyad by default), open the folder, double click the ie-ads.reg file and allow it to merge into the registry.

Go to the Sun Java Website and update your JRE. Current is 1.4.2_08

Reboot and post a new HijackThis log.

Thank you for replying. I wonder where you find time to help all these people? Well, I tried everything you suggested. Lord only knows if I've done everything correctly! Well, I guess you probably will too! Following is most recent log, but my home page is still being redirected. I installed spy sweeper yesterday before I saw your reply. Was that a mistake? Also I hope I got the program from SunJava installed correctly, it took 30 minutes to download.

Right click the desktop and choose new>folder. Name it HJT. Move HijackThis.exe to the folder.

I see no signs of an IE hijack other than by Earthlink, but it may be hiding, masked by those entries. So, lets fix them, which normally puts things back to the Windows default settings. Scan again and check the following entries, close all other windows, then click fix.

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://start.earthlink.net
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://www.earthlink.net/partner/mo...ton/search.html
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://start.earthlink.net/AL/Search
    R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://start.earthlink.net/
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://start.earthlink.net/
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = http://start.earthlink.net/AL/Search

Open the control panel, then Internet Options. Click the Programs tab, then Reset Web Settings button. Click the General tab and delete Temporary Internet Files, including offline content.

Open IE and see how things are. Post back with a new HijackThis log.

This thing is stubborn, no doubt about it. I've done everything you suggested, & it's still in there. Somehow this re-direct to MSN homepage has made itself the default, and I can't figure out how to change it. I have run hijack probably 10 times, and there is one thing that keeps coming back after I go online again (R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - ~CFBFAE00-17A6-11D0-99CB-00C04FD64497} - (no file) ). Any idea???

Open Spybot, advanced mode. Click the Tools button, then IE Tweaks. Uncheck the Lock start page and Lock control panel boxes if checked. Close IE, then reopen. Click Tools, Internet Options, then use default button. Close IE and all other windows. Fix this entry with HJT.

    R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - ~CFBFAE00-17A6-11D0-99CB-00C04FD64497} - (no file)

    Reboot.

Open IE and navigate to your desired homepage, then open IE options and click use current, click apply and OK. Open and close IE a couple times and let us know if the setting holds.

I think perhaps I am whipped. I cannot keep the R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - ~CFBFAE00-17A6-11D0-99CB-00C04FD64497} - (no file) from coming back. I have run HJT over and over and deleted it, but it reappears everytime I go on-line. The homepage is still being re-directed to MSN, and now I cannot send or recieve any email with the exception of spam. What do you recommend? I think I must have a professional fix it, but perhaps the most effective thing would to just have it reformatted. I really don't have much to lose, as there is little to nothing personal on the computer( it's almost brand new).
What are your thoughts? I would really like to thank you again for all your assistance, I hate for it to all have been a waste of time.

Have a look at this page, and check for the existance of any of the mentioned files, folders and registry keys (if you're comfortable with looking in the registry). Let us know what you find.

Also, download "Registry Search Tool" (RegSrch.vbs) from here
    http://www.billsway.com/vbspage/
start it and paste in CFBFAE00-17A6-11D0-99CB-00C04FD64497, wait for it to complete the search, click ok at the prompt. Then when wordpad opens, copy that back here please.

Okay, I guess we're not giving up yet!?! I searched files and folders and did find a folder named "SVCHOST ", which is listed on the page you directed me to. I did not know how to search the registry, but I did have Registry Mechanic downloaded on my computer, so I ran that, and low and behold, the MyWaySA was still on there. The program deleted it (hopefully). Following is wordpad you requested.

Copy the contents of the code box to a maximized blank notepad. Be sure the formatting remains exactly as it appears below. Save it to Local Disk C: as regfix.reg, making sure to change the Save As Type to All Files(*.*)
    Code:
    REGEDIT4

    [HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-3910834735-1103937218-205047780-1008\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\URLSearchHooks]
     "~CFBFAE00-17A6-11D0-99CB-00C04FD64497} "=-
Reboot to safe mode, logon to the Admin account and open C:, then double click the regfix.reg file and allow it to merge with the registry.

Reboot back to Windows and let us know if the entry is gone from HijackThis.

The link refers to a file named svchost.exe within the C:\Windows directory. There is a legimate file of the same name in C:\Windows\system32. Are you sure of the location of the svchost you found, and that it is a folder rather than a file? What is the location?

I cannot get the regfix to merge with the registry. It tells me it cannot import regfix, there is an error accessing the registry. I believe that I followed the instructions correctly. Is there a reason that would be, or did I just not do it correctly?
When I did a search in my computer for SCVhost, this is what it finds. I guess they are probably files, please excuse my ignorance. This is all very new to me.

    SVCHOST in folder c:\I386
    SVCHOST.EXE-178E8FFO.pf in folder c:\WINDOWS\Prefetch
    SCVHOST.EXE-2D5FBD18.pf in folder c:\WINDOWS\Prefetch
    SVCHOST in folder c:WINDOWS\SYSTEM32
    SVCHOST in folder Media\I386

Download the URLSearch.zip file attached to this post. Save it to your desktop. If it saves as attachment.php, right click and rename to URLSearch.zip You may need to enable viewing extensions for known file types to see the zip and php extensions. To do that, open My Computer and click Tools on the menu, then folder options. Click the view tab of the window that opens, uncheck the box to Hide extensions...... and click OK. Now right click the zip and extract the URLSearch.reg file to your desktop. Close all open windows and double click the reg file, allowing it to merge with the registry. If the merge is successful, reboot and run another HJT scan and post the log.

The only svchost that I'm suspicious of is the one located at Media\I386. Right click that file and choose properties, then version tab. Let us know version #, company info, etc......and what else is in that I386 folder.
