Hello everyone. I'm new here - found y'all while googling around looking for help with a virus/trojan-thing I picked up late last week. I've read a number of the entries and think I've done all I can - downloaded, updated and ran Norton anti-virus, Adaware, spybot and spy sweeper. I also restarted my computer in safe-mode and ran the anti-virus programs as well as a few generic, basic steps suggested on the bbs. But I can't seem to shake the infection - when I restart my computer, whatever's left over reinfects causing multiple popups, a changed homepage and desktop, extra toolbar, website links on my desktop and major processor slow down.

so, I downloaded and ran hijackthis. I'm including the log below as many others have desperately done. I feel just as desperate - help please - I'd be grateful.

    Hi santabear,

I think you have too many
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run and O4 - HKCU\..\Run
Those are programs run before you can to anything.

Export them (BackUP) from "regedit" and delete everyone you do not know what is it. You can look at those folder names in the value column to tell if you know it.

    Restart.

You are or were using Kazaa. This is not technically malware by itself, but it installs malware in order to run properly and it opens the door for every other nasty program you can think of. I strongly recommend that you remove it. Read this article for alternatives that will provide some of the same function without the garbage: http://www.spywareinfo.com/articles/p2p/ If you opt to remove it, first use Add/Remove Program to remove it and any reference to Altnet and P2P Networking. Go to your control panel, then to add/remove programs...uninstall P2P networking...If/when asked whether you also want to remove Altnet components, say 'Yes'.
P2P Networking is a totally useless Kazaa add-on, and it's been reported to be responsible for serious system slowdowns. You may also want to run KazaaBegone to completely purge it from the system. Make sure to get the available LSPFix, just in case. Additionally, there is another new 'nasty' virus using P2P networks to spread itself. More here.

It looks as though you have a peper infection. Download the following fix to your desktop and double click. Then click 'Find and Fix' and reboot if prompted.

    http://members.shaw.ca/techcd/VB_Projects/PeperFix.exe

Reboot again when finished and post another HJT log. We will finish cleaning up after the above is done. ;)

    Making Progress...

I've completed the add/remove of the kazaa software as well as the p2p business. and i successfully ran the kazaabegone program with no adverse effect on my internet connection.

I attempted to link to the peper fix at http://members.shaw.ca/techcd/VB_Projects/PeperFix.exe but I got "page not found" message from Shaw. possibly removed page?

Dave - if you repost a corrected link I'll run the infection removal program, reboot and post a HJT log.

    Thanks!

    Tom

    new hjt log

Hi - I found a proper peperfix program at another link after looking around for a while. I ran it and rebooted. My Ad-Aware started up and cleaned up the things it found, but I'm still having a few problems:

a link on my desktop to a site called hardcore f**k
repeated attempts to reassign my homepage to www.coolsearch.biz

My HJT log is below - thanks for your continued help.

I'm gonna run my spybot program - that seems to neutralize the above problems until the next reboot - it'll allow me to continue my work while attempting repairs with you.

    Doin good. ;)

Download CWShredder from the link in my signature. Open it, close ALL other windows and click fix.
Open Ad-aware and check for updates. Configure for a custom full scan and run. Delete all it finds.
Reboot and post another log. Then we'll finish cleaning up.

    more progress, but curious...

    OK. Much better.

I downloaded CWShredder and ran it. It did immediately "detect a varient of coolwebsearch trojan (cws smartsearch.2) that it reported was trying to close CWShredder. It put random symbols in its title bar and ran the sweep successfully without reporting finding anything - said my files were clean.

I then updated ad aware, checked for updates, configured it for a custom full scan, and then ran it. For the first time EVER, it came up clean. Amazing.

I rebooted my computer and at startup got the following error message:

    Windows cannot find "c:\windows\system32\services\exploit.exe

I expect that this is good news. I was able to "OK" my way through and onto my desktop. I ran hijackthis and will report the findings below.

One more curious thing though: when I opened my browser to come here to post, everytime I entered a web address, I got directed to a funny address then immediately redirected to the web address I'd originally entered. For example, this is the redirect that came up when I clicked to reply here:

    http://origin.midaddle.com/adView.a...wsbbs.com/showthread.php?t=32234&mac=7de7d71d

anyway, the log is below. thank you again - i can't tell you how grateful I am that you're helping me through this mess.

Right click My Computer and choose properties. On system restore tab, check the box to turn off. OK out.

Go to start>run and type msconfig, hit enter. On the boot.ini tab, check the box next to /safeboot and OK. Yes to restart. This will restart your computer in safe mode.

Now in safe mode, you will need to show hidden files and folders.

Open C:\WINDOWS\system32 and delete the folder services and the file wsaupdater.exe if present.
Open C:\Program Files and delete the folders WindowsSA, MyWay and SEP if present.
Open C:\Program Files\Common Files and delete the folder midaddle.
    Open C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB and rename realsched.exe to realsched.old
Open C:\Windows\Temp, select all and delete.
Open C:\Documents and settings\username\Local Settings\temp, select all and delete. Do this for all usernames.
Open C:\Windows\Prefetch, select all and delete.
Open My Computer, right click Local disk C: and choose properties, then disk cleanup. Check all boxes except compress old files and OK.
Uncheck the /safeboot box in msconfig and ok to reboot.

Back in Windows, scan your PC with RAV. Check the box to autoclean. If any files are infected and uncleanable, click the report button then copy and paste it here, along with a new HijackThis log.

    new log & RAV report

I've completed your instructions - again, more progress. I'll include the RAV report first (it wouldn't produce a report on its own, so I copied and pasted it myself) followed in the next post by the hjt log.

Thanks! Looking forward to futher instructions...

Well, the HJT log looks good. Alot of infected files to delete but none of them running. With system restore still disabled, delete the !PeperFix folder. Open C:\Documents and Settings\user\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5, select all and delete. One of your email folders contains an infected photo....Outlook.pst->Attachment.4210: "photos.zip "->photos.jpg.exe I can't tell you which one because the Outlook.pst file includes all E-mail folders, addresses or anything else that Outlook 97, 2K or XP collects. Navigate to each of the other locations and delete the files found to be infected. Then empty the recycle bin, reboot and do another RAV scan. If any of the files/folders will not allow deletion, reboot to safe mode and try again.

From what I have found thus far, the following has in the past been a false positive with RAV, so leave it alone.

    C:\Program Files\Common Files\Webroot Shared\Internet.dll
