Could someone explain when this icon is used????
I have tried to figure out how this particular icon is put in a message, if at all!!!
It's a small probem, but it just agrivates me so much when I can't figure out these things for myself ---will I never learn how to operate this contraption sitting in front of me?????

    Appreciate help on this,
    Lucy:confused:

Lucy--The sender sets that flag to indicate "Priority ". In the New Message window your should have a button marked Priority in the Toolbar. Click to set High, Normal or Low. If not such button, click Message and set priority at High there.

It simply means that ... erm ... the message has been flagged (helpful stuff, eh :D).

Flagging is a method of marking messages which you want to stand out as being important.

Open a message, click on Message - Flag Message and that message will then be marked by the red flag.

If you're not manually flagging the messages, maybe you've created a rule which does it automatically. Have a look under Tools - Message Rules - Mail.

Which actually shows as an exclamation mark rather than a flag! I wonder which Lucy means? :D

    Red flag icon

    Hmmmmmmmm-----
I know that the sender sends the priority, & this is different from the exclamation icon. I have sent high prioity messages, but I do not know how this red flag icon is used.?????

Has anybody used it &what is the difference from the red flag, versus the high priority sign.

Am I making myself clear, or have I thoroughly confused everyone!!!
Appreciate the replies from Welshjim & Brett, but I don't think I am any more ahead than when I started!!!

Will see if there is any info in my books
    Thanks all
    Lucy

    Footnote to last message:
Maybe that icon is only used after you read the message, & flag that message as being important.
    Am I right????? who knows!!!

    Perfectly clear :D

Look under Tools - Message Rules - Mail and check your existing rules. It's almost certain that in one of the rules you'll have checked the "Flag it" option (possibly by mistake).

As I said, the purpose of flagging is simply to make the important stuff stand out. For example, if messages from me were of particular importance to you, then you could create a rule which flagged all incoming mail from my address so that it would stand out and be easily identifiable (from the 100's of other mails that you receive each day) when it arrives in your inbox. Similarly, using the steps described above, it's also possible to manually flag messages which you wish to be able to easily identify in the future.

    It's confused one again (Lucy)
I looked under mail rules (I don't have any!!!!) but how come I got this message that had a red flag. I know the person, but no such piority was given to person.
Have to go out now Brett, but do appreciate your replies.
By the way, how do select just part of the quote on your reply message, I tried that, just by highlighting what I wanted quoted & the entire message came up --------but that's another story, for another day.
    Thanks & more thanks
    Lucy

Will check back later, if any other helpful hints emerge!!!!!

The sender sets the priority (the exclamation mark) and the receiver (you!) sets the flagging (the flag).

If it was only one message that was flagged in this way, maybe you did it by accident? Just pressed the wrong button?

AFAIK, it's not possible to quote only a portion of the original text in a reply - you need to include the full text and then delete whatever bits of it that you want to delete.

Lucy--OK, so I got it wrong. Sorry for contributing to the confusion.
I was correct in saying that the sender sets the priority, but priority is indicated by the exclamation point.
When you receive a message you set the red flag--for whatever your reasons . One way is (from OE Help)
"To flag an e-mail or news message:
When you receive a message, you can flag it for later reference.

In the main window, click in the flag column next to the message you want to flag.
    -or-

In the main window, select the message you want to flag and from the Message menu, click Flag Message.
    Notes

You can sort all flagged messages and group them together by clicking the flag icon in the header of the flag column.
You can remove the flag from a message by clicking the flag icon.
You can define a rule that flags certain messages when they are received. "

So, if you are receiving messages with the red flag already attached, it should be something you have set. Exclamation points (priority), on the other hand, are set by the sender.

Lucy--Thought you had left the forum for the day!!
Do you see how to quote a portion of a post?
Earlier I used Highlight the portion desired|Copy|Paste. But I did have to type "Quote:" and add the lines, myself.
This time I used Highlight the portion desired|Copy|click the Quote button|Paste|click OK.
Not much difference, but the latter is quicker.

    Quote:

Highlight the portion desired|Copy|click the Quote button|Paste|click OK. (your quote)

Did that Welshjim, & it worked, but I didn't press the quote button, because I couldn't find the quote button.

Sa la vi (don't think I spelt that correctly) but you get the idea!!!

If you happen to come upon this tomorrow, please see if you can figure out what's happening????

    Thanks,
    Lucy
