I went to restore a file that I accidentally deleted from the recycle bin only find that there were no files in there at all, there should have been plenty. I checked the bins property settings and the "Don't move to the recycle bin" was checked but when I change it to custom size and click apply then OK it just reverts back to what it was and won't save any files. I have installed Diskeepers undelete software to try to find the files and that doesn't show up any deleted files either its as if these files had never existed.
Any one got any ideas how to get the recycle bin to remember its settings and start saving deleted files again.
    Jim.

Thanks PeteC I have applied the fix but it made no difference.
As soon as I uncheck "Dont move files to the Recycle Bin. Remove files immediately when deleted" and click apply then OK it just re checks itself again.

Unfortunately I cannot find any reference to your issue of the Recycle Bin not retaining settings via Google.

If you have a retail install DVD you could run System File Checker, but I would not hold my breathe in the hope that it would resolve the issue :)

I ran sfc /scannow no joy there. I have 3 HD's and I have selected each one when changing settings but they all won't keep the new settings for some reason.

Try to delete your recycle bin files on all your drives.

If that fails, you're probably SOL. Maybe a repair install would fix it.

I opened up the folder $RECYCLE.BIN and then the recycle bin folder, there were only 3 old files in it which I deleted I done that on each drive, Still has not changed anything.
One thing I did notice is that the icon for the recycle bin folder is that of a bin with a locked padlock I dont know if that means anything at all.

You should delete the $RECYCLE.BIN folder.

It is normal that the folder Recycle Bin in the $RECYCLE.BIN folder is shown with a padlock.

Problem solved, I booted up into safe mode and the bin worked fine booted up normally and it stopped working so I open up windows task manager and closed down processes until I found out what was causing the problem, It turned out to be undelete service which is part of diskeepers undelete 2009 I have uninstalled that and every thing is working good now. Thanks for all your help guys. Jim.
