    A little history...

I was gifted this laptop a few months ago (see specs), anyway recovery partition was shot (if it even existed) and no Install CD's were available.

During some troubleshooting last week I found a hidden I386 folder in C:\Windows which appears to contain all the setup files required (with SP1). I was going to follow instructions here to slipstream SP3 and create a new CD until...

    :(

Slipstreaming isn't important (and as that article points out it may not work with some OEM's) but I really would like to recreate the CD.

This isn't an attempt of piracy, I've looked in that folder and the product key inside the unattend.txt file matches the one currently used and the one on the label underneath the laptop.

Anyway long story short, can I recreate a Windows XP CD from this?

Beats the heck out of me...But you do know that you can leagally borrow a cd and copy it don't you;) As long as its a Home or Pro OEM it sould work with your keycode.

Good idea, the boot loader should be the same no matter so even if I copy it from a friends I can still use PB's OEM files.

I've cloned the drive but would much rather restore this dinosaur to factory defaults :)

    Thanks Pete, getting there...

That article confirmed that I can install XP from those files :) I just need to create a bootable CD now (no floppy) but since I can install from DOS (winnt.exe) or windows (winnt32.exe) that shouldn't be a problem :)

    Addendum:

I'm going to create a freedos bootCD and run winnt.exe from autoexec.bat, I can't see a fault with this so marked resolved...

When Murphy's law kicks in though I'll be back :D
