I had a mapped network drive that was 'made available offline'. Both the server and the local mapped drive have died but I still have the files cached in the /csc dir. Is there a way to recover the original filenames from the unintelligible names that windows gives the files? Thanks.

"unintelligible names" - as in the 8.3 shortened versions you get when you originally had long file names? Such as

automo~1.doc when it was originally Automobile I have owned.doc

Unfortunately, no. I mean unintelligible names such as 09342856 in directory d1 where it was originally "myfile.txt" in directory "mydir ". If I guess the correct program to associate the files with, they open successfully.... but there are enough files to make reforming all the associations by trial and error not feasible.

Ouch. There may be an elegant way to do the job but best I can suggest is an app like Peek that will add a Peek option to the right click menu and offer you a choice of a quick look in binary, standard, or unicode mode.

This should be a somewhat faster way to identify many of the files (by content) so you can give them a name & extension that makes sense.
