I have XP on my PC and had loaded my Win98 H/D as well and both had been operating OK until a recent large hiccup.
NOW.. When I boot with both H/D connected I get a blank screen with the flashing - in the top left hand corner.

When I boot with both drives connected and XP CD which boots into Setup options I select R for repair then the recovery console comes up with 1:D:\Windows option which is the only one given.

When I logon to option 1 up comes type Administrator password.
I am the only one who uses this PC and it won’t respond to any passwords I enter.

I then went into the BIOS setup and changed passwords there but that has not had any beneficial effect.

Is there some way I can override/get around this Administrator password to get me to the next
    step?????

    Thanks

That is 100% the reason that I no longer Dual Boot or Multi OS Boot.

There are advantages to Dual Booting. But there are also disadvantages to it.

I lost not one, not two, but THREE Operating Systems ONCE due to a power Failure.

I have both an XP and a Wn98 HD mounted in the case but I WILL NOT hook them both up at the same time. All I need to do is move two plugs down about 1 ".

And if I do something with one I am 100% certain that it is not going to effect that other.

And I have a lot of stuff moved over to a slave drive which is capable of being used by either OS. Both HDs are partitioned the same. And thing installed on the same drive in both.

moved over to a slave drive

    XP/98/slave.??????? 3HD??????????

Looks like your dual sys is a dual backup..pretty good arrangement.

What is the 2plugs arrangement ?

Great info but doesn't help my situation.

What is the 2plugs arrangement ?

The XP and 98 drives are both set as Master ( jumperwise )

The third HD is jumpered as Slave with NO PRIMARY partition on it.

I just need to move the power plug and the Ribbon cable from one Master to the other.

My Anti-Virus ( AVG ) and Firewall ( Kerio ) are both on the Slave and work for both OS. My Documents it on the slave along with Favorites. What ever gets added to one is available in the other.

The first thing I had to make sure of is that XP did not change drive letters on me. And it did not.

    Both Master drives are C: D : E: F: G:. and the Salve is H: I: J:

I think ( from my past experience ) that you may have some reinstalling to do.

    EDIT/ADD

My Eduora E-Mail is on the slave also.

You mention a large hiccup and now it won't boot; how many HDs and partitions do you have installed; were there any hardware/software changes just prior to this happening and explain the hiccup? I'm suspecting a hard drive crash at this point.

Well, maybe 'nuff said - stick with the applets recommended on the board :)

As you have an installation CD try a Repair of XP -

Boot from the CD and at the Setup Screen press ENTER - ignore the Repair option on this screen.

Agree to the licence on the next screen by hitting F8

Select the Repair option on the next screen.

It appears to me that the item in the link you posted would be VERY DANGEROUS to use in a Dual Boot setup.

It may see and remove things that it considers not needed in the OS that is actually running. But the other OS may need them.

    THANK YOU ALL

My deepest thanks to all who have made a contribution to this problem.

But I have to say "Praise GOD "....as mysteriously as this problem arose it seems to have resolved.

With quite a bit of exercising numerous logical! remedies and during that period the system lost all track of both hard drives I have finally got the system running again and dual booting between XP and 98.

As all logical! remedies proved fruitless I re-entered the BIOS setup and manipulated the BOOT setup a couple of times with an eventual successful outcome.

I have tried to restore the OE emails lost with no luck so far.
I will keep trying...but if someone out there can put me on the right track it could save me a lot of time.

Once again...THANKS ALL you are a great bunch.

    ps.
A - OK, I have managed to sort out the restore email issue....WOW.
