Hi--OK, so I was finally sent a recovery CD from Emachines. It is giving me an option for recovery or to use command prompts. Will I lose my files either way?
I don't know anything about command prompts.

    Please Help!

I am trying to hard to fix my computer. I have a restore windows xp cd sent to my by the manufacturer and am not quite sure what to do. I guess I thought it would come with some type of instruction. Can I repair vs restore windows xp as to not lose anything? If so, is that with a command prompt?
When I choose that option, I get a prompt for A:\> I don't know what I need to do. Can anyone help? Please?

Have never used a eMachine restore cd. I do know if you select recovery it will give a message that the hdd will be formated, loosing all your data.

If you post the problem , some one might be able to help fix it with out a restore.
    1) Do you have a floppy drive in system ?
    2) Does the system have a writable CD/DVD ?
    3) Size of hdd ? DO you know if hdd is NTFS or FAT32 file system ?

Why not call Tech Support at eMachines and ask them how to use the disk?

Given that a wrong choice could cause you to lose your data and installed applications, I think it would be safest to ask eMachines. For all any of us know eMachines has fifteen different recovery CDs depending on model.

It's not that I didn't think of that--contacting emachine. It's that I cannot afford them. I'm sure this would be a very simple question for them to answer but I can't afford to pay the $30. I called a couple of weeks ago just to ask if they had sent out the CD to me and she was actually trying to charge me for that! (for the call--not the cd) I couldn't believe it. Then when I called back again to hopefully get someone else with some common sense, they told me that it was noted that I REFUSED to pay.

I've been happy with their machine but that's the kind of service they offer and I'm not up to the fight today. I wish I could find out what command prompts I can use and why its A:\> instead of a "C" prompt that I seem to see everywhere else? This is so frustrating...

    Tareco,

I also have an E-Machine Computer and it comes with a Recovery CD. If you boot with it, it will format and partition your Hard Drive. It has a bootable Ghost image on it. The only thing that is separate are the drivers for sound an integrated video card and you can take them of the cd and install separately.

I don’t think you can take apart the ghost image and install only some of the things in it.

So, take all the files that you want to keep and burn them to a CD or DVD and have all program disks ready for reinstall.

    Regards
    Sven
