What I apparently need to do after working with HP and this board is go to Circuit City [best option that I know of where I live] and have them look at the computer and see if they can fix it.

However - knowing too many stories of dishonest workers going through files on computers - I would like to get access to the hard drive and move the "My Documents" [which is where her stuff is all kept] off that computer onto our spare external hard drive.

With no power on that laptop - is this possible and if so how do I do it?
I have searched this website for a similar situation but was not able to locate anything about this scenario.

As always your help is greatly appreciated. :)

Bsaically you need to remove the hard drive from the laptop, install it temporarily in a desktop using a 2 1/2" to 3 1.2" IDE adapter, transfer your files to the desktop or external hard drive connected to the desktop, delete them from the laptop drive and then replace the drive in the laptop.
