The dmp file is usually a waste of space since almost no normal people can understand it. I think Microsoft has a few techs who can.

At this point I have three suggestions.

First, set your system not to reboot automatically if it runs into a serious problem. That way it will crash to a BSOD and you can copy down information from there before rebooting. Right-click on my computer then advanced tab~settings button under startup and recovery. Under system failure uncheck the line that says automatically restart.

Next, start~run~cmd then for each drive
chkdsk x: /r (where you use each drive letter in place of the "x ")

Last, after emptying temp internet files, temp files and such,
start~run~sfc /scannow (will require your XP install CD if it finds any problems and has to replace some system files)

thanks Newt, followed your suggestions, still the same but this time with the blue screen and lots of words.
I believes this is the problem as shown on the blue screen,

    TRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

what should i do next ? should i try the thread started by mindbug on "repair install" ?

    thanks

My computer has restarted several times for no apparent reason. I read your reply concerning this or a similar problem and set my computer not to
reboot automatically. The blue page said the problem seems to be caused by
    the following file: 7tmdmnt.sys

How do I correct this problem? I couldn't find anything in the Microsoft support.

Thanks for any help you or anyone else can give me.

Got details on the stop error from bereed by email. Another thread had given the suggestion to stop automatic reboot to be able to get detail from the blue screen and that did the trick.

Lots of stuff on there and most of no real interest so lots of typing to reproduce it but the essential pieces were there.

    From bereed
The problem seems to be caused by the following file. 7tmdmnt.sys
An attempt was made to write to read-only memory.
    .....
    Technical information:
    ***Stop: 0x000000BE (0xF9C820CA), 0x03F4A121, 0x80541CA4, 0x0000000A)
    III 7tmdmnt.sys - Address F9C62537 base at F9C24000, DateStamp 3C5058a3
    .....

I searched for the file on my computer and found three, although I didn't actually see the file itself. They are:
    C:\Windows\ServicePackFiles\i386
    C:\Windows\System32\drivers
    C:\hp\drivers\modem\Lucent

Combining the two pieces of information, it looks like bad drivers for the HP Lucent whatever. You need to get the most recent ones and replace the ones you have now with them.
