My kids are trying to record on the computer using a microphone. They need to record themselves playing their instruments for an audition for a musical group they are joining. I have the microphone plugged into the line in/mic in jack on the sound card. I then try to record them using Sound Recorder, but nothing plays back. The sound card is a Creative Sound Blaster Live 24-bit. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Are you selecting the microphone as the recording source before doing the recording? To do this, double click the speaker icon in the system tray. Click the options menu, then properties, then select recording. Then click ok. In the next window, put a check mark in the box under microphone. Then try recording the song.

If you're using Creatives drivers and your sound applet is different from what I described I can't help you. I'm using the drivers that come with XP so it's a little different. I have used Creative drivers in the past though but I don't remember the exact procedure. The process is pretty much the same though. You just have to find the recording part and select microphone before doing the recording.

I followed Zander's advice and it did the trick. Once again, this board comes to the rescue! Thanks a bunch.
