A man has been fined a record-breaking $120m for making more than 90 million automated marketing telephone calls in the US.

Miami salesman Adrian Abramovich was accused of trying to sell holidays and timeshare properties with the unsolicited robocalls.

The fine is the largest the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has ever issued.

    Ouch!

All I can do to stop telemarketers is let the cat chew on the phone cord. :D

It's not been that big of a problem with mobile. We seldom give out the number, so I guess that helps.

In India, telemarketing on mobile is a much bigger problem as almost everyone has mobile & the landlines are rapidly decreasing.

Doesn't matter if you give the number out or not. What they do is have a sweat shop of people that are given a list of 100 phone numbers and colored markers. Red means don't call them again, Orange means get somebody that can put a little more pressure on them and green means they bought the sale of junk that you were selling. When they get finished with that 100 phone numbers they are given another hundred.
Little Mary gets XXX-XXX- 0000 to 0099. Next person gets XXX-XXX-0100-0199 and so on. You produce or your out the door. You can't hide from these people.
Put phones in for places like these for years. Can't deny them phone service.

My wife's cousin & her husband fell victim to a prank call a few years ago.

A caller professed to be from law enforcement and demanded they pay a fee up front, or face arrest (can't remember the reason). I think they coughed up $2000.00 before they realized the whole thing was a scam.

How the heck they fell for this is beyond us. These are not dumb people, but I guess they let their guard down.

We get the hoax calls on landline in NZ but it depends on which Telco you are with. My Telco filters the calls pretty rigorously but we still get the calls from Windows telling us we have problems o_O:mad:
James, that "you haven't paid your fine" has been doing the rounds here in NZ. A couple got the call but twigged it was wrong when they didn't own a car.:p
