    Hello all!

I'm looking to find out what would be needed to connect a pc to a wireless router? Am asking this to help my mother connect a pc she has in her office to the connection she currently has hooked up to the internet in the family room.

She has (I believe) a Linksys wireless router. Both pc's use WinXP for their operating system. I would like to find her a wireless adaptor for the office pc (so she doesn't have to try and run another cable in their house). She wouldn't use the office computer very often as she uses the one in the family room, but would ocassionally like to have access to the internet while in the office.

Would the adaptor have to be a Linksys one or can it be of another brand/make? We have limited access to retail stores that may carry a big variety and although I know I could order one on-line for her, I was hoping to purchase one to give her for her (75th) birthday next week. :)

Any help you can offer would be greatly appreciated!

    ~Vicki

Any wireless adapter would work. Doesn't matter who made it. I am assuming that this is a desktop. You can get a USB one or else a PCI one. I would go with a USB one. Have used several different types and they all worked pretty good. I like the ones that have a small antenna on them.

Below is a list of many of them.

I prefer the ones like this one as you can move the antenna around if you are having bad connections.

Thank you MrBill for your reply. I was hoping that it wouldn't matter what brand/make it was! That helps me when I start looking for one here locally. (I don't want to risk ordering one online and not have it arrive in time for her birthday!)

I had considered going with the USB type as well, but never having used one myself or knowing of anyone who had, I was unsure of their reliability. (I'm not the best when searching on the internet for consumer reviews). And not having to take the computer apart to install a PCI card sounds even better! :)

Hopefully they aren't too difficult to install (i.e. software, drivers, etc?) I've been known to get confused when doing that and certainly don't want to mess up her computer if I'm helping her!

Thanks again for your advice! I'm sure she'll be pretty excited once it's all hooked up!

Your welcome. I didn't mean that you had to buy one from the links I posted, they just show a wide variety of them on one page. Wally-World, Radio Shack, Office Supply stores and PC Stores usually have a variety of them locally.

Thanks again MrBill for your help, even by providing the links to show the different types/models of adaptors was very helpful. I knew you weren't necessarily suggesting to buy them from there, but I appreciated you showing me what's available.
