After receiving 4 updates for my 64 bit Win 7 OS on May 13th, I can no longer click on a URL in an email and open IE 8. There is an error message. I can open the 64 bit IE 8 browser but can not open the 32 bit version.

The updates are Definition Update for Windows Defender - KB915597
Security Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB978542)
Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool x64 - May 2010 (KB890830)
Security Update for the 2007 Microsoft Office System (KB976321)

I would not be certain that the updates are the cause of your problem with the possible exception of Windows Defender which I do not use.

I received the last 3 updates and have no issues with IE8 on my 7 Pro x64 system.

Incidentally there was also an update for the Outlook Junk Email Filter - maybe you do not have Outlook installed?

Which emailer do you use? - best initial suggestion is to restore your system to a point prior to receiving the updates and then to install them one by one in the hope of finding the culprit. You can do this through Programs & Features or by using System Restore.

Yes, I have Avira Antivirus and Windows Firewall for my home network. Is it possible that the updates turned on Windows Firewall and that is the problem? I thought it was off.

Have to say that statement is contradictory ....
the first part indicates that Windows Firewall is on ?? ;)

My question was - which emailer do you use?

Surprised that you were not also offered the Outlook Junk Mail Filter update, but that's not important right now. My original suggestion is unchenged ....

Thank you. Now that I have written my post and gotten your responses, I can click on the URL in the email announcing that I have a response and it works, i.e., takes me to the bbs on the internet. Go Figure. Guess it fixed itself. I need to check on my 32 bit IE brower. Nope, that brower still tells me that IE is not working and Windows is looking for fix. Guess it did not totally fix itself

I followed Pete C's recommendation and restored my computer to a time before the four updates and turned off the auto-update option. Then I tried to click on a URL in email and also launched my 32 bit browser. Both worked.
Then I tried to download the 4 critical updates one at a time, manually. Microsoft Update could not find any critical updates. In the "view update history" window I find that the four problematic updates were shown as installed successfully. When I look at the installed updates in "Add or Remove a program" of the control panel the updates are not listed. Now what. I do think I need at least some of the critical updates which I think are currently missing.

Confirmation at least that one of the updates probably caused the problem.

I am surprised that the Update History shows that the updates are installed - I would have expected a system restore to have removed them.

Just to be clear - installed updates are not listed in Control Panel > Programs & Features as they were in the days of XP - I never used Vista.

In Programs and Features click on View installed updates in the left hand column - only those updates which can be uninstalled are listed. A number of updates cannot be uninstalled and are thus not listed.

If the update history shows the updates to have been installed successfully I think you must believe that.

As a check if you Google the KB no. you can download the update manually, e.g. KB978542 .....

    http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/MS10-030.mspx

If the update is already present in the system when you try to install it you will be advised.
