    Hello all!

Through kbAlertz, my attention was drawn to KB883357 which discuss how Critical Update KB842773 installs incorrectly if the Service BITS has not been started.

This may cause backup programs to not function correctly.

Since a lot of us, me included, have disabled the Service BITS, according to BlackViper SAFE settings, I thought I'd better chime the bells.

When I checked my system, the Service BITS had been set to manual and was started but the update had not been installed correctly.

It is fairly simple to correct and maybe someone smarter than me can provide a simple script to execute.

Interesting about the recommendation from the Black Viper site.

    BITS (Background Intelligent Transfer Service)
Doesn't sound like this one would cause much system load and not having it available could certainly cause problems.

How about removing the update, making sure BITS is running, and installing it again?

I don't know from where You quoted and how old the source document is.

Some time ago, I downloaded the pdf (dated 7/21/2003) on which I based my services tweaks and regarding BITS, it is what he currently has on the web:

That tells me that unless You interrupt a download, You don't need to have BITS running in order to get Windows Updates.

Newt, You ARE smarter than me ...... :p ...... You didn't even have to make a *.reg file of the manual editing in the command window!

Well, the update is in Add/Remove so that probably will work.

    I forgot:

As I mentioned earlier, my setting of BITS (disabled) had been reset to default (manual) and the service had been started. This must have happened when installing the update and I must rhetorically ask:

Why not start the updating procedure by starting the service rather than finishing with that action?

Even if I hadn't changed the default setting, it wouldn't have been certain that the service had been started and the update installing correctly.

I remember another recent update, KB840374, which needed the Help and Support Sevice to be started.
This was actually mentioned in the "ReadMore shortcut" provided with the update.

Maybe any service that has a connection to an update needs to be started for the update to install correctly?

Long and difficult research to get the source for the bit I quoted. See the picture. And on my XP-pro PC at work (domain) there is no mention of the workstation dependency but I couldn't operate here without workstation running so that part is moot.

    Newt,
    thanks for Your efforts!

I misunderstood the quote as coming from BlackViper. The description of the Service that I find in XP pro is: "Uses inactive bandwidth to transfer data" (translated from swedish).

Set to "manual ", the service starts on my computer even if I don't download anything. But then ...... ...... I suppose receiving E-mails IS downloading.

Shows again that relying on someone else to make decisions about your computer is not necessarily the best thing to do. :(

Why you’d want to have BITS off is beyond me.

Well, we rely on other peoples advice from square one, in the computer shop to start with. Then, if we take an interest, we start to learn but the learning process is, among other things, about deciding which advice to adhere to. The more You read and the more You browse the web, the more conflicting pieces of advice You come across.

Anyway, BITS is back to manual on my system ...... ;) ...... !

    Bits

If I didn't rely on others (educated) decisions, I "d still be playing with DOS.
I have the utmost respect for the suggestions and help I get here then I make the choice and decision to try it.

Sure, but the point is that you first inform yourself, not just follow a single advise, and form your own opinion.

Doesn't say that it'll be the right one all the time....
