When I shut down my pc and restart it two problems occur:
    1. windows of previsously installed programs open up about 20 or so that I must close each one at a time.

    2. Folders do not remember the folder view settings I chose earlier. re: like view = icons or details.

any help or links for fixes would be great..
    I run avg 7.0 - adaware -spyware -
    thanks

Have you tried a system restore?

And if worst comes to worst ( a cut and paste from my files)
You might want to do this:

Start > Run > cmd sfc /scannow and have your XP install disc handy.
sfc - system file checker, retrieves the correct version of the file from %Systemroot%\System32\Dllcache or the Windows installation source files, and then replaces the incorrect file.
If you want to see what was replaced, right click My Computer > manage, expand event viewer > system.

With due respect to CharlesVar (gotta start keeping track of the authors of my notes!

    Two thoughts ...

    1) Check the startup folders for your Username and All Users accounts.

    2) Check the Startup tab in the System Configuration Utility (Start > Run, type msconfig) to see if these unwanted programs are listed. If so, uncheck them and see if that solves the problem.
